Luther and Calvin on Secular Authority

Availability: Ready to download

This volume contains new, unabridged translations of Luther's On Secular Authority and Calvin's On Civil Government. These works represent the authors' attempts to balance their commitments to the maintenance of order in Church and polity on the one hand, and the overriding imperative of uncompromising obedience to the will of God as revealed in Scripture on the other. Luther and Calvin do not offer perfect philosophical arguments for their positions, but I would consider their entrance into the discussion miles ahead of modern discussions. Today's political discourse silently pretends that rulers can be subject to principals floating in the sky. Philosopher's like Bastiat naively argue that the non-aggression principal is sufficient. However, Calvin and Luther understood that rulers are ministers and subjects to a higher power. More than that, they understood that this higher power has spoken to us through the divine revelation of scripture.

Short and sweet this work outlines Luther's perspective on how the secular and spiritual kingdoms should interweave. The notion of individual responsibility that he brings to the fore in the spiritual is influential not just for the effect it had on disrupting the hierarchical dominance of the Catholic Church but also in that this would spill over into the political realm and begin the process of dissolving other hierarchies of power.
