The answers to those questions and a lot more are in Homer Hickam's new Kindle Single "From Rocket Boys to October Sky." If you think you know the story of the book and the movie, you don't! Hickam says "Writing Rocket Boys wasn't easy. In fact, I got a million dollars of psychotherapy I didn't even know I needed!" The making of October Sky wasn't easy, either. "From Rocket Boys to October Sky" gives lots of behind-the-scenes stories both on-set and off. Before the first frame of film was exposed, Hickam was involved with the writing of the screenplay and his comment when he saw the first draft -"I'm going to have to go up to West Virginia and apologize to everyone in the state!"-gives an idea of how that went. Be with Homer Hickam as he struggles with the complexities of how a major Hollywood motion picture is made, and how he disagreed with aspects of the film even while he admired the dedication and professionalism of the men and women making it. Readers will also be alongside the director, producers, actors, and crew as they create one of the most beloved movies ever. The book has lots of photos taken on the various sets, too!

I love the behinds the scenes peek at the making of the movie; Rocket Boys is one of those books I read at least once a year (Pride and Prejudice being the other). I have been a fan of Homer Hickam since a teacher showed us "October Sky" (in parts, which he never finished, so I went out and bought my own copy) back around 2000 or 2001. In fact, "Paco" is what made me buy a kindle and go to the "dark side" so I could read his books! This particular one was riveting, as it was about him, not who he was before. I look forward to reading more of his books in the future. As much as I absolutely loved this, it left me with more questions I wanted answered.

Rocket Boys / October Sky has been a favorite of mine for years. I’ve read the book at least a dozen times and I never tire of watching the movie. This Kindle Single is a fast read with a ton of revealed secrets as to how the book became the movie. Hickam is refreshingly honest throughout the single even when talking about HIS movie. After visiting Coalwood, WV more than once, now I want to visit The tiny town of Petros, TN to see where the movie was filmed.

The family dynamic was a power struggle the parent fought constantly but the father was the one of the top men of the mine and was always gone so the mother raised the kids on her own. They disagreed on so much, depending on the day it would be about church on the food, to the football game. School for sunny was alright he was making it by but that’s where he found Quintin the first brains of the operation till sonny taught himself high school trig. He was never good at sports like his brother and that’s the only way out of coal wood. His mom thought he was going to have to live and breathe the mine just like his father. Right when the rushing launched their first satellite everyone went outside to see it. It was the first thing to see move in space besides shooting stars, sonny was in awe and started his rocketry and stated getting kids to join up and they became the rocket boys and if you switch the letters its October sky. For me this book helps me feel like I can accomplish anything and do what I truly want to do. I feel bad for sonny because of his dad and the way they they communicate. I love the shuttle love he gets from him mom and his query way of doing thing and talking to girls. The town feel like it would be park city back in the old days when they had no real roads going into the town and nothing close enough to visit or run off to. So you had to either do a commodity like food or clothing or the mine. The way the boys approached the way of making rockets is better than most kids their age. The did it like engenders and didn’t shotgun (make early conclusion) they tested teach peach bit by bit till the discovered rocket candy cut it smells solo good. That is the wonderful book of October sky.

This October I was given this class assignment to read "October Sky". At first, I had my doubts about the book and found it very boring and dreadful in the beginning, but I continued and read the whole book with ease. As I found this novel very motivational and inspirational. This book shows the journey of a young boy named Homer Hickam Jr., nicknamed as Sonny, who has a strong passion the rockets. He has always lived in the shadow of his older brother, Jim Hickam. Jim is a star football player and as the reader, it is well-relieved that their dad, Homer Hickam Sr., favors Jim and that Sonny is perceived as the underdog. When you finish the book, you can see why I describe Sonny. The book takes place in the 1950s in Coalwood, West Virginia. Homer Hickam Sr. is very dedicated to his job as a Coal miner and sometimes that might get in the way. Sonny has a passion for rockets and he and his friends start a club, the BCMA. They create rockets and in the beginning, the community doesn't believe in him and as the story goes on, you'll realize that hard work does pay off. When you read the book, you might feel the say way or you won't, but I do recommend this book.

Homer Hickam Jr.'s life experience of "October Sky" is simply a miracle; starting from the bottom, and relentlessly climbing to very top. Hickam Jr.'s life and desire is the why I was hooked. Because it is written at the author's point of view, you can visualize Hickam Jr.'s life: the struggling obstacles, the moments of success, and most importantly, the vital spirit possessed by those 'Rocket Boys'. You can practically feel it, like if you were there. The outcome of persevering: a successful life with fulfilling joy. For example, Homer Hickam Jr (himself) went on to work for NASA, even with his idol's co-workers. Anything can be achieved with the heart of never giving up.

The start of this book is frankly boring. The first half is really hard to get into. This book is about a boy who has his mind set on building a rocket. At the start of the book his dad didn't support him because he thought it was a silly idea and when he is older he should work in the mine but toward the end his dad started helping him. However on another note his mom supported him throughout the process because she wanted him to do something big to the family out of the coal mining town. These boys had lots of preseverance.

This was a great coming of age memoir. As a female I totally enjoyed reading this book. I was intrigued to be inside the thoughts of an adolescent boy. The great dedication to the group "the rocket boys" is fascinating in the way it gave me hope. It is a great book on many relationship levels. Mother and son, brother and brother, friends and friend, father and son, teacher and boy, hero and boy, spiritual and boy, girl and boy, dreams and boy, parents and boy, and adult and author. October Sky was a very thoughtful book that can teach you to follow what you want to do and if you keep on persuing what you like you will go somewhere. This book has many up and down moments which fill you with emotions as when they start making the rockets and no one thinks they'll go anywhere and no one believed in them until later on. With this you can realize that at the start if you try hard enough you will get something out of it and that's what they did. 'October Sky' or 'Rocket Boys' has an interesting aspect between science and achieving your goals. In my opinion, the first few chapters were not very appealing to me, but as I read on, the book got a little more interesting (than the first few chapters). I got bored in the beginning and the story-line was very simple. I liked the fact that the book was a true story, true stories interest me. This book told the story of these amazing boys who started from nothing in a small coal town in west Virginia, studying hard and starting to learn about rockets. They knew nothing about them but they used science on their side and started building rockets! While being teens they just wanted to go for it and do something in the world, to be someone so your not stuck in the same town forever. They did make it though, they all left and became successful and worked really hard towards their goals. I am very confused by a number of the other reviews. This is not the memoir Rocket Boys; some of those other reviews sound like they were written by students forced to read that memoir in school. I absolutely loved this book!!!! I was required to read it as a class assignment, but when I started reading I was immediately pulled in. The characters were humorous and relatable and the story was fantastic. It really added to the story that it was all a true story. I definitely liked the relationships of different characters and have character grew and changed over the course of the story and the ending was very satisfying. All of this is why I gave this book 5/5 stars.

October sky was a one of my favorite books! Although it is boring in the beginning it gets much better. This book is very inspirational to anyone that has a goal that seems impossible to achieve. I especially recommend it to teens and young adults! It is about a boy named sunny who's goal is to build a rocket to beat the russian one! He lives in a terrible coal mining town and has to work very hard to accomplish his goal. October sky was a one of my favorite books! Although it is boring in the beginning it gets much better. I did not enjoy this book. The way the novel was written was very confusing and not enjoyable to read. There was very little action until more than half way through the novel. A fantastic read that I would recommend to any and all, especially those who are looking for a fun coming-of-age story! It's a quick read and leaves you feeling full and bubbly with a happiness only a well-written memoir could. I was given this book as a gift and will continue to gift it to those I know are in need of a heart-felt story just like I was. :) A fantastic read that I would recommend to any and all, especially those who are looking for a fun coming-of-age story! To the stars! Homer did not disappoint in this "behind the scenes" view of the making of the movie, "October Sky". I grew up watching the launches from Cape Canaveral on the television, screaming, "Go, go go" as the monster rockets roared away from Earth. It's sad that youngsters today don't get that thrill today. Homer's books give them the chance to imagine. To the stars! I was not a fan of this book. I do not like realistic fiction and this book is that. I had to read this book for school and other than that I would not have finished this book. It is about rockets which at the same time I was reading this book in another class I was building and launching rockets. I was so tired of the rockets that I ended up hating that class and this book.

The novel October Sky is a fantastic read. The wonderful mixture of drama, romance, comedy, brotherhood, and science is incredible. To think that all of this really happened is amazing. Homer Hickam Jr sure can build a rocket, and he sure can tell a good story.

This book was amazing, loved it. I get why some people don't like it, rocket science isn't for everyone. I also understand that the book starts out really slow, but gets really good the farther you get in. I get why some people don't like it, rocket science isn't for everyone. I also understand that the book starts out really slow, but gets really good the farther you get in. the book rocket boys was about a group of people who wanted to build rockets. the main charcter, Homer was disliked by his father because his father really encouraged him to work in the mines like him instead of following his dreams which were to be like Van Braun. As the story progress he starts to build rokets with some of his friends to pursue his dream of becoming a rocket scienctist.

Great read, couldn't stop reading it. I can relate to Homer, and connect to the book easily. I would recommend it to everyone I know who reads. Great read, couldn't stop reading it. I can relate to Homer, and connect to the book easily. I would recommend it to everyone I know who reads.
