Why Newly Born Babies Can't Talk and Other Stories (Children books) (Tales by Twilight 2) is written beautifully by King Samuel Benson. After reading this authors other work I had to have this new release. African stories that have been handed down for generations by mouth are finally in print. With a slightly modernized version can now be told for more generations without worry of the stories being lost. "Why Newborn Babies Can't Talk" The tales in this short read tell how babies were born talking and why they don't anymore. This is a very interesting with a good lesson. "Why the Tortise is Bald" This tale of how the tortoise lost his hair, is quite funny and I enjoyed it very much. "Why Pigs are Attracted to Refuse Dumps" This is a very crafty fairy tale and the moral lessons we learn with each one of these stories is interwoven in a delightful way. I can't wait to read these stories to my grandbabies this weekend. They will make great bedtime stories. If you haven't read King Samuel Benson's other stories, you are missing out on a wonderful storyteller. Here are a few I have read and loved: Tales by Twilight (A collection of African Folktales) and Blood Tournament (2018, #1) Two very different but awesome reads. 5 stars for another well written book for the author

Unlike European and Asian folktales, that have been recorded in books for centuries, stories from Africa have been passed down by word of mouth until very recently. That would explain the rarity of African folktales on our bookshelves; and also the uniqueness of the stories, for a story changes just a little bit with every retelling. It is, however, important to preserve these tales for the future generations with no further corruption from the outside world. Such writers as King Samuel Benson, Unlike European and Asian folktales, that have been recorded in books for centuries, stories from Africa have been passed down by word of mouth until very recently. That would explain the rarity of African folktales on our bookshelves; and also the uniqueness of the stories, for a story changes just a little bit with every retelling. It is, however, important to preserve these tales for the future generations with no further corruption from the outside world. Such writers as King Samuel Benson, who record these stories for posterity, are, indeed, doing all us a great favor. However, it is only fair to note that the writer mentions that he has "carefully re-written them to suit a modern audience." Still, while the tales might have some of the modern references, the core morals and lessons remain intact. This particular collection contains three stories: "Why Newborn Babies Can't Talk," "Why the Tortoise is Bald," and "Why Pigs are Attracted to Refuse Dumps." These are morality tales, each teaching a lesson in concise form. These are mostly short animal fables, with the greedy Tortoise, with whom we became familiar in the first tome of Tales "by Twilight" making an appearance in the two of the stories. The first story, "Why Newborn Babies Can't Talk," is of particular interest, because unlike in the majority of African folktales, it talks about humans, their perceived morals, and how a divine consequence can follow a seemingly correct action. Both "Tales by Twilight" books are a delightful read and recommended to those who enjoy folktales.

“Why Newly Born Babies Can’t Talk and Other Stories (Children Books) (Tales by Twilight)” by King Samuel Benson is the second book by this talented writer in his series of African folk tales retold for a more modern audience. Short and poignant they are ‘legend’-like explanations about oddities of the world, such as why is a Tortoise bald? Why can’t babies talk? Why do pigs rummage through garbage? Short and poignant they are ‘legend’-like explanations about oddities of the world, such as why is a Tortoise bald? Why can’t babies talk? Why do pigs rummage through garbage? The short stories, based on good night stories as told to the author by members of his own family, are warm and witty, amusing and to this reader very original. In times where children’s books tend to go paranormal and the way of super powers a collection like this is like a breath of fresh air. Even more rewarding since it is the air of ancestral culture and heritage that must not be forgotten, particularly African culture that relies so heavily on oral history without much being written down. Most importantly for the reader is to know however that these stories are highly enjoyable for their own sake, funny and clever, and they make for excellent bed time stories. Offering surprising answers to the questions posed and being neither scary nor difficult to understand, they are wonderful stories to share with the next generation. Benson did a great job at grouping these stories together and updating them in a style that preserves their originality and simplicity. Call me a big child, but I really look forward to the next in the series.

In WHY NEWLY BORN BABIES CAN’T TALK and Other Stories, King Samuel Benson has once again brought together a small group of classic folktales, interpreted and retold for our modern ear. The author has a warm and gentle way in telling these tales. One of my favorites begins, “Many, many years ago when animals could still talk, there lived the first clan of animals in a remote village in Africa.” This was an enjoyable read filled with lessons and culture. King Samuel Benson will blow your mind with this one! My niece read the last page with me, and she has taken it to start from the beginning. Really very funny stories and with lessons, too! This is definitely an author worth watching. Five full stars for this one!

Written in the tradition of Rudyard Kipling, these three stories explain the mythical origin of certain aspects of our life that we tend to take for granted: such as the fact that babies don’t talk, that tortoises are bald, and that pigs like to dig through garbage piles. As you read this short collection, you will encounter talking babies, river goddesses, angry mobs who get punished for their wrongdoings, and other interesting characters who will amuse you, entertain you, and make you think.
