An incredible resource. I bought this in 1981 when it came out in paperback and worked through it trying to see every film and to read at least one book by each author. It seemed like a hopeless task but fortunately the science fiction genre nosedived into terminal mediocrity shortly afterwards so the book's actual utility never dated and the fact that it cuts off at the end of the seventies is effectively a bonus. "A bug documented is a feature" as a great philosopher once said. An incredible resource. I keep coming back to this title, more through habit than anything else - but even if my constant referral to the Encyclopedia is some sort of formed response, there is no better example published since. Having had this for so long, it is getting rather shabby, but I wouldn't part with the book for anything. So useful, and so intelligently put together, that despite the gaps (and there are many) and questionably outmoded references, it is still more enjoyable to peruse than many of the best inte I keep coming back to this title, more through habit than anything else - but even if my constant referral to the Encyclopedia is some sort of formed response, there is no better example published since. So useful, and so intelligently put together, that despite the gaps (and there are many) and questionably outmoded references, it is still more enjoyable to peruse than many of the best internet guides which have hoped to surpass it. Being released on the cusp of the late seventies revival of SF as a genre, this lacks much of what the modern audience would know, but it is packed with pulpy references, and the cornerstones of the genre get their due respect.

Okay, so it's about 35 years out of date, but this extensive, nicely illustrated book was the best fiver I ever spent when I was a young 'un. I referred to this for my sci-fi needs over and over until it actually fell apart (I now have a first edition hardback which is much sturdier). There was an updated version in 1992 or so, but without all the illustrations which made the original such a joy. This encyclopedia is definitely a product of its time, and it came out just at the start of the massiv Okay, so it's about 35 years out of date, but this extensive, nicely illustrated book was the best fiver I ever spent when I was a young 'un. This encyclopedia is definitely a product of its time, and it came out just at the start of the massive resurgence of sci-fi that "Star Wars" kick-started, but essential for anyone interested in the older aspects of the genre. And a heap more fun than trawling through internet guides.

This was one of the seminal reference works in the early eighties, and while it was a bit dated even then, it is still filled with excellent information about the genre of science fiction, weighted heavily toward film and prose. Unfortunately, it's real usefulness now is probably as a non-internet source for specialist term papers. But it is a great book to page through and happen upon info on an old favorite writer or film.
