You haven't seen much of me here since I've devoted myself "full time to wine". Too busy writing for two blogs and a magazine, going to and planning events, tasting wine, making connections... This book is for those interested in achieving a Level 2 wine certification - from a globally recognized course. Some take it for a job in the wine or restaurant industry. I'm taking it for the knowledge. It's a great read, not just a goodread, for my purpose. It couples with 16 hours of live instruction from a certified WSET educator and a study guide.) Well it's not exactly a rip-roarer, but it at least got me through my WSET Level 2 exam.... WITH 98%! If only I'd paid more attention to the appearance of Chablis. Monday night I am sitting the exam for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Intermediate Certificate. This text is a bare bones, just-the-facts-ma'am overview of the world of wine and spirits, with a decidedly European bias (WSET is London-based), though WSET loves New Zealand wines. YAY! Although spare, it also strips away the technical jargon and presents a solid foundation of knowledge. I geek out on this stuff, so I have enough of a wine library to fill in the gaps. If I pass the intermediate, I hope to pursue the advanced- depends upon finances and my ambition. The class begins in March, but 6 months advanced preparation (study, tasting) is recommended. Which means starting next week. Phew.

This is the official textbook of the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, intermediate level. Not bad, easy to understand, but only an introduction to the wine topic: many important subjects are just mentioned and the book doesn't go very deep. Anyway a must-have (literally) if you are studying for the WSET intermediate exam and after all a decent reading. Reading this in advance of doing WSET intermediate course I hope it gives me a head start Some useful background info for the casual reader who wants to be less mystified by a wine list, but certainly makes for thirsty reading!

I passed my WSET Exam with merit so I'd have to say this book is pretty good. I'm excited for Level 3! I passed my WSET Exam with merit so I'd have to say this book is pretty good. I'm excited for Level 3!
