Bob is a widower - he's retired, and living in a small hamlet in the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland. He does a spot of gardening, pottering about to his heart's content, and he also plays the odd round of golf. Have I created the archetypal pipe and slippers vision of retirement? Well then hold onto your hats! Because Bob is in for a very bumpy ride, and he's taking the reader on this roller coaster ride with him! After a stranger turns up at his home with some interesting news, his life will never be the same again. Together they discover fraudulent activities at an Edinburgh investment firm and decide to take the law into their own hands. They plan and carry out investigations into the greed and corruption there. This leads to real danger (for Bob in particular) as the crooks will stop at nothing to maintain their illegal activities. This was so well written, in an easy to read style. It had well drawn likeable characters that made you care about them. It's fast paced, and a real page turner, and I hope this isn't the last we've heard of Bob, (he could have quite a future!) All in all an impressive debut novel. Thanks to Goodreads for this first reads giveaway , and to John Dysart for a great read.

A bunch of senior citizens solving a deadly investing company's frauds, as a result constantly throwing themselves into the mouth of danger. We generally come across a young hero cracking mysteries like this, but Trail of Greed by John Dysart represents a hero who is way beyond the league of young-generation, with some promising actions and thrills and adventure throughout the book. Thanks to the author, John Dysart, for sending me over a copy of his book, in exchange for an honest review. Bob Bruce is a retired widower, living in a small town called Fife, in Scotland, spending his days by playing golf. One fine day, a French man knocks on his door, claiming to be his half-brother. But this French man, Pierre, comes to Scotland with a motive. He had invested money in an investing company, which is secretly stealing millions from Pierre, so he wanted to expose them with the help of his new-found brothers, Bob and Mike. And hence the action begins which will keep you thoroughly engrossed into the pages of this book. The author's storytelling is one-of-a-kind. From the very first pages of the book, he had maintained to keep the story interesting. In the beginning we see a lot of family reunion, about how one reacts after knowing the truth that he/she has a brother, the part of accepting him in the family, family values and then the mystery is unfolded so smoothly with the perfect twists and turns will definitely keep you on your edges. The characters fit in perfectly with the plot, especially, Bob, who is old but brave in his heart, he is not at all scared to face any kind of danger, although we see, so many times he gets almost killed. Not to mention about the romantic element between Bob and Maggie, a country-side hotel owner, who is a lonely woman. All-in-all, a good mystery book is hard to put down. Exposing a powerful investing company's embezzlement is not easy; sometimes it may nearly claim your life. So if you want some good pot-boiling and brain-twisting mystery, then grab this book for sure!

This is a first novel for John Dysart. I really liked the fact that the characters were all well into middle/late age - proving that there is life after retirement! The characters get caught up in a financial scam, and while trying to gain retribution for the investors, find themselves getting deeper into trouble. A few people get tortured or killed along the way; there are a couple of red herrings; and also a couple of romantic entanglements as a side-line. I found it a relatively easy read, although the frequent golf references went over my head. The main characters were pleasant enough, though I thought their acceptance of the situation(s) they found themselves in a little unrealistic. For example, after a car is blown up (possible attempted murder?) the character just seems to "shrug it off". You have to remember that these aren't former special services or military types - just average, ordinary people. In my mind, I suspect the average joe would be rather more shaken and seriously questioning whether to proceed with their plans. All in all, though, an enjoyable read. Trail of Greed

I got this as a free Goodreads FirstRead, and I was pleasantly surprised. Good little thriller, if a little golf-filled for my tastes! Interesting local colour, and a good page turner.
