This is a rather interesting story from 1964. Jean is at a loose end after her father's death working in central Australia when she is offered a job helping out on a bus tour of scientific men and their wives. VIB's as they are dubbed...very important brains. Jean doesn't start off well when she mistakes Sir Ion Torrington for the bus driver, Lofty, because of his height and has him handling luggage. Sir Ion doesn't seem to mind at all and it seems he and Jean are off to a beautiful friendship. U This is a rather interesting story from 1964. Until Jean realises that the other single person on the tour, Helena is with Ion. Not only that, the girl reveals they are secretly engaged. And nothing Ion does...apart from seeking out Jean, casting her apologetic looks and possibly kissing her...suggests any different. Helena takes a dead set at Jean and there are some incidents where Jean is put in danger that she wonders if the other girl has deliberately set out to hurt her. With an increasingly worrying accumulation of events, culminating in a dangerous situation in the desert it seems that a happy ending might be more simply an ending for poor Jean. This was an interesting and enjoyable read with a tour of the Northern Territory including Darwin and a visit to the Olga's and Ayer's Rock, more properly known these days as Uluru.
