My review : Will their present circumstances put a stop to their attraction ... Mrs Aston has set her sight to make me travel in various place but also time. After the regency period, then a trip to Hollywood, today I landed in the middle age. Madeleine and Garrett are both damaged persons due to their failed marriage. Garrett lost all trust in women when Madeleine fears the marriage bed and has every right to be quite wary of men. I really admired Madeleine, after what she went through, she left everything behind and ran away alone in very insecure times. She is caring soul but also a fighter and a survivor in the heart. She does not let her fears and wounds impede her course. Garrett let bitterness embed his heart, yet as years went by, he realizes it poisoned his relationship with his daughter and his mother when they have done nothing. Until his encounter with Madeleine shows him how little he knows about his daughter. Their chemistry reaches the chart but is slow-burn journey as both need first to put aside their past hurt and trust one another. 5 stars for this second chance at love tale. I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publishing, here is my true and unbiased opinion. https://www.facebook.com/429830134272...

Madeline is abused but it mostly happens off screen and the only two sex scenes were very tamed. Though the story was refreshing, I think a darker version would have made for an intriguing read, at least for adults.

Hard story for me to rate because if I go on the theme of the story, which I didn't care for, I would rate it lower. But, that isn't fair to the author because as usual you get your monies worth from her. Her character's are written flawed but with depth. The secondary character's add to the story too. I always pre-order this author's work because she knows her craft. That is my fault not reading the blurb! Both the H/h are troubled souls and have reason to act the way they do. MOST of the physical abuse by the h's husband is off page, but you read about the aftermath of the pain and suffering she's endured. The H thinks his wife has left him and a bitter, sad man remains. I dislike immensely stories about cheating and both cheat. Is there ever a good reason to cheat? That's the million dollar question. When this story takes place counseling didn't exists and divorce was hard to come by if even possible. Did I feel sorry for each of them, yes. The h does keep a major secret from the H and I'm not a fan of that either. Many times she had the chance to tell him, especially when he told her about his martial status. This is not a feel good romance story. It also has a sad side story with a friend of the h's and her son. I wanted to know more about the friend's son. We have suspense some twists I didn't see coming. There is lovemaking, outside of marriage and heat level 4 out of 5. We do have cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and spice. (ljb)

Madelaine finally reaches a point where her goal is in sight but has to take cover when her last chance of returning to her parents' home is cut off. Salvation comes in the form of a cheeky tyke and his mother and Madeleine's career as a mummer begins. By chance, Garrett comes across Madeleine at a fair and vows not to let her out of his sight again. Despite the underlying brutality of the plot, this is a well written and gentle romance that warms the heart. Garrett makes a wonderful hero as in spite of his own anguish and grief, he determines a way to improve the situation for Madelaine and her troupe of mummers. His friend Ashby brought humour to the story, whilst Madelaine herself wins the reader's respect for overcoming the difficulties and obstacles in her way. I enjoyed this novel and found the characters entertaining. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Oh wow, such a riveting story and I now know 3 things for sure....I want to join the mummers, I want to beat the heck out of Henri to see how he likes it and I'm in love with Garrett! lol Although the story contains severe wife abuse, it also contains a love and passion between two people who deserve to be loved and have a HEA. My heart completely went out to Madeleine and what she suffers at the hands of her abusive husband, Henri, but I loved how she escapes and finds the freedom to do something she loves...playing her lute, singing and storytelling when she joins a troupe of traveling mummers. When she meets Garrett, the attraction is instant but her secret will certainly ruin whatever chance they have. As for Garrett, he has found no peace ever since his wife left him for another man and has become a brooding and angry man. Madeleine becomes his light in the darkness and no matter what secret she's hiding, he knows he can't live without her. There are some twists and turns in the story that will make you gasp and I also have to mention how much I adored the children:) I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Lauren Linwood's, Music for my Soul, reminded me why I adore strong female protagonists. Madeleine has all the traditional characteristics of a Disney-like princess... Beauty, quiet strength, integrity, and the gift of song. Only there's one problem--her prince (husband Henri) is a monster! Relying on wits, Madeleine makes her escape from her sadistic spouse. This is where her flourishing imagination takes over. Such stories she weaves! In fact, it gets her into trouble (the right kind). It hooks Garrett (our brooding sexy hero)--right down to the core of his soul. The secondary characters are wonderful and help magnify the value of Madeleine. Which, in my opinion, is the most important factor in this story. Sometimes we need a heroine who's nearly perfect. Except for the tiny white lies she tells. Imaginative and fun!

Fearing death from abuse due to failure to conceive, Madeleine Bouchard escapes while in England on a business trip with husband Henri de Picassarat, a French champagne vintner. The two meet by chance on the road to London. Complications arise as Madeleine concocts story upon story to cover her true identity and status. After she slips away and joins a troupe of traveling mummers as a unique female troubadour, Madeleine chances to meet Garrett again, and he decides that he won't let her get away this time. So Garrett arranges for the troupe to settle into the village on his land for a faire preceding the Solstice celebration. But as Garrett and Madeleine fall more and more into one another's affections, circumstances just become more difficult for each. Where is Garrett's wife? Will the Church free Garrett to honorably pursue his growing love? What happens when Henri de Picassarat arrives to settle business matters with Garrett regarding their French vineyards? Will Madeleine make it back to her family in France? How do the vineyards connect Madeleine and Garrett? Lots of interesting questions developing the plot of this story!! I have to admit to having trouble warming up to Garrett because he seemed so angry and sullen and humorless in the first several chapters. Garrett's friend Ashby is far more appealing from the outset. (Maybe why Alexa features him in the next book of the series!) The unconventional Madeleine grabbed me from the beginning with her survivor instinct, creativity, compassion, steadfast friendship, playfulness, talent, ethics, and kindness. The two children in the story, Ewan and Lissa, delighted me, and the author writes them well to bring out some of the best (and worst) attributes in other characters. (Alexa Aston, could you be creating a story for grown-up Ewan and Lissa? I hope!) The French-English wine business provides a unique background for this series that I have not considered for this medieval time period. I hope this aspect develops further in the subsequent stories. For whoever needs to know: sex scenes are tender, satisfying, and not too numerous. Thank you, Alexa Aston, for this entertaining and heart engaging story!

Song of the Heart by Alexa Aston is the first in a new series: Medieval Runaway Wives. You would think it would be easier to disappear back then, but it turns out it is not. The world is smaller and it is more difficult to run far enough. Garrett Stanbridge, the Earl of Montayne, has a marriage, although arranged, that has proven to be acceptable. He has a lively daughter, Lyssa, and had lost a son, somwhat recently. His wife, Lynnette was not the love of his life, but life with her was good. . . until she disappeared. His head groom reported she had gone riding, and his steward reported seeing her with a strange knight-several times. He could not believe it, but no matter how long he looked he never found her. Her disappearance turned her into a cold, cruel man...to everyone but Lyssa. Madeleine Bouchard had finally decided to run from her husband. She was afraid that if her attacked her one more time, he would kill her. She sewed all her jewels into the hem of her skirt and snuck away in the middle of the night. Garrett and his friend, Ashby came upon her as she walked and, despite knowing she was lying, helped her make her way to London, where she planned to hire passage on a ship to France, return to her parents, and live the rest of her life in a convent. Her husband was looking for her, knowing what she might do, and had agents at the docks. What happened next, happened for the best and changed her life completely. Song of the Heart is a touching and heart-breaking story. In medieval times, husband had complete power of their wives: they could beat them and even kill them with impunity. Such was the case with Madeleine, who was a well-written and likeable character. He almost succeeded. Luck saved her. Luck and Garrett Stanbridge, who was beyond stubborn. Often the evil characters are better written (or acted) than the good ones. This was not so in this novel. Garrett was good, but Madeleine was multi-dimensional and seemed to live several lives. Twists and turns abound in this intriguing novel of wife abuse in 14th century England. I loved it. I highly recommend it. I was invited to read a free ARC of Song of the Heart by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own. #netgalley #songoftheheart

A Real Hero Good book! A look at Domestic Violence during Medieval times when a wife was property and had no rights. Madeline was brave to leave Henri before he killed her. Glad Garrett got the truth about his first wife and closure. The love between Madeline and Garrett was sweet. He really was her White Knight.

But after the marriage Henri forbade her contact with her family and told her family the break was her idea. He has “punished” her for small failings often and severely. She has many scars on her back and legs from his punishments and even a circular scar on her cheekbone from his signet ring. She walks with a slight limp, due to a broken knee from Henri, when she told him she didn’t think her lack of children was her fault or his previous wives, but his. Madeleine is desperate to escape from Henri because she knows she will not live much longer if he has his way. Fearing for her life and planning to return to her family, then to spend the rest of her life in a convent so as not to evade her marriage vows, Madeleine escapes via a “sally port”. She has secreted many of the jewels Henri gifted to her, (more for his own reputation than for caring for her) inside the hems of her tunics and skirts to pay for her passage to her family in France and her care at the convent. Finally escaping to the road, she comes later upon two men riding, and fearing capture or that they were bandits she claims to be the wife of Lord Montayne – who has a reputation so dreadful that no one would touch her lest he come after them. However, since one of the men was Lord Montayne they knew she was lying but went along with her story to see what she was up to. Garrett who called himself “Sir Garrett” to Madeleine and his friend “Sir Ashby” decided to help “Lady Montayne” get to London as they tried to find out who she really was. Garrett’s wife Lynette had run away about three years before and had never been heard of again, leaving him with a lovely little daughter and a broken heart. Here the story truly begins, though I’ve left enough details out so you will still be surprised and intrigued! Of course, Garrett begins to fall for lovely Madeleine, who BTW sings like a bird and can tell imaginative and wonderful stories to entertain everyone! A very talented lady who plays the lute (another valuable she brought along – her only real possession). Garrett and Ashby stop at a small house outside of London to repair his horse’s shoe, Madeleine gets the smithy’s wife to help her hide from the men (concocting another story for the smithy’s wife) since she’s afraid to go to London with them because she really isn’t Lady Montayne… Ok, enough spoilers…this is a marvelous and intricate story of desperation, escape, finding love…also of forgiveness, mystery, danger, and righting old wrongs! The tale is incredibly well told with some humor as well as a building romance. The characters are loveable, some you can hate, and some are comic…a little bit of everything! Lauren Linwood is a wonderful writer with a fantastic imagination. I hope this is only the beginning of many wonderful tales! Believe me, it’s hard to put this one down, I found myself awake until the wee hours of the morning because I just had to know what was going to happen! This book has it all ladies! Please enjoy this one for yourselves, no regrets! Author supplied copy for honest review.

I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this remarkable and compelling story. It is not an easy story to read, since it deals with adultery, something that skirts what is traditionally acceptable in a medieval historical romance, but Ms. Linwood handles the subject with a masterful touch. The story drew me in from the first page as Madeleine flees her abusive husband, whom she is convinced plans to kill her, since she had not conceived in the three years of their marriage. On her long trudge down the road, she gets a small stone in her shoe and she sits down in the middle of the road to remove. When she hears the sound of horses, she scurried to the side of the road, but she forgets her lute and runs out to retrieve it. Two men see her, thinking they are highwaymen, she bravely tells them: “If you dare come closer, I’ll bring my lute crashing down upon your heads.” She quickly realizes they are gentlemen by their manner of dress and the dark one’s impervious attitude, definitely not highway men. She tells them she is Lady Montayne, not knowing that the dark one is none other than Lord Montayne. She makes up an outrageous story of men who waylaid her and her husband’s valet who was escorting her to their London residence, knocking the valet unconscious. Intrigued by this brazen woman, Garrett introduces himself as Sir Garrett and offers to escort her to London, but along the way she escapes. She meets up with a troupe of traveling mummers and joins them, becoming their troubadour. When she crosses paths with Lord Montayne again, he offers the troupe a great deal of money to come to his estate and perform for the upcoming summer solstice. Once the troupe arrives at the estate, the pacing of the story slowed down a bit, and I found myself looking at what percentage I had read, giving the story a bit of a sagging middle. Fortunately, the pacing picks back up at around, and I again couldn’t flip the pages fast enough. There are moments that are so heart-breakingly poignant that they brought tears to my eye. I became fully invested in the characters, and even though at one point, I could not imagine how they were ever going to have their “Happily Ever After”, I kept rooting for them. There are very few sexual scenes in this book, but it’s filled with plenty of great sexual tension. At times, it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. My heart ached for Madeleine because she wants to be with Garrett so badly, but will not give into temptation. Of course they eventually do, and it is a highly emotionally charged scene to say the least. I absolutely love how this book ends. I was so relieved when Garrett and Madeleine do at last have their HEA, after having so many obstacles put in their path. Of course, that is what I love about romance. It is what I expect and this book delivers it in a very satisfying way. If you enjoy a story filled with passion and sexual tension, then this is a book you will definitely want to read. Happy reading!

    WTF Are You Reading?

Music For My Soul is one of those rare surprises of a tale that serves to remind readers why they are 'lovers of the story'. This is after all, a book that tells a story. A story full of detail, life, nuance, character, color, fire, and a visceral quality which allows the reader to immerse his or herself fully in its experience. While it is true that Madeleine Bouchard has been handed a rough hand by life, she shows herself early on to be crafted of the stuff of true heroines. A story full of detail, life, nuance, character, color, fire, and a visceral quality which allows the reader to immerse his or herself fully in its experience. While it is true that Madeleine Bouchard has been handed a rough hand by life, she shows herself early on to be crafted of the stuff of true heroines. Bound and determined to live her life free and unfettered by abuse, convention, mores, or even the self imposed limitations of her own fear. Even when young Madeleine's escape from her sadistically abusive husband puts her into the path of the rakishly handsome Lord Montayne, a fate that would have had lesser damsels swooning and picking nursery colors; our girl runs for the hills, determined to live her life...her way...for better or worse. Madeleine breaks the mold yet again by not falling back on the 'tried and true' method of relying on her looks to get by. She is a woman of great talent, a composer, an artist, and of all things...a female troubadour! Of course the blend of intelligence, loyalty, caring, tenacity, and a general love for life is a balm to the lonely soul and desolate heart of Lord Montayne. She also plays a pivotal role in the lives of Garrett's young daughter, and the son of her best friend. The pacing of this book is fast enough to be a one sitting read, but detailed enough to read like a much longer novel. There is a great cheekiness to the banter and cat and mouse that goes on between Madeleine and her leading man. The moments of lightheartedness are a wonderful counter balance to the reads more dramatic fare. If you are looking for more than just a story. If you are looking to be transported out of the here and now, and into a past that you will take with you into forever...heed the romantic melody of Music For My Soul. Reviewer's Note: It is not often that I find myself compelled to offer a personal recommendation of a title. In fact, I try my best to remain objective in my reviews. Music For My Soul is a title for which I must make an exception. This is a novel that I found impossible to put down. I can say with confidence, that this book would be a much welcomed addition to any reader's book pile.

Unusual Medieval Set in England in1346, this is the story of Madeleine Bouchard, aka Lady de Picassaret, who seeks to escape her abusive husband, a wealthy wine merchant. She steals away in the night, hoping to return to her home in France, and to her parents who have no idea how badly she is being treated. As she escapes, Madeleine encounters Garrett Montayne, aka Lord Montayne, and not knowing who he is, but familiar with the name, she poses as his wife. It turns out Garrett’s wife left him and their young daughter for another man. So both hero and heroine are married to someone else. Fate and the wine business keep bringing them together. Coincidentally, Montayne not only has business with Madeleine’s abusive husband, but her father oversees the Montayne estates in France. The tale continues as Madeleine takes up with a band of mummers singing her songs and telling her stories, apparently bewitching all. Montayne arranges for the mummers to spend time at his estate to keep Madeleine close as he is enthralled with her. A debut novel, it was well written and the places and people are well described, so kudos to the author for that. I particularly enjoyed the scenes with the mummers and the two children in the story. In places the story dragged for me. There seemed to be a fair number of subplots involving secondary characters either employed by Montayne or the mummers, and some of those ended sadly. The villain was a nasty, deranged man and I have to say I skimmed the scenes where Madeleine was being abused. I do not enjoy reading that or thinking the heroine was nearly dead from another beating. While a minor thing, I did stumble over the use of the characters surnames as titles. Even in the 14th century, English nobility were known by titles, not surnames. Thus, since our hero is Garrett Montayne, he would not be Lord Montayne; he would be Garrett Montayne, Lord [title]. And there were some terms that were a bit modern for the 14th century, but generally the story had an old world feel and reflected much research into the mythical stories and mummers.

However, behind closed doors, Madeleine lives in a nightmare. She’s beaten by her husband frequently, and she is coming to realize the he may indeed kill her. So, she decides to run away and try to make it back to her family in France and eventually seek refuge in a convent. However, all that changes when she meets Garrett Montayne on a dark road the night she makes her escape. Ironically, he is on his way to meet her husband, Henri, to discuss business. She makes up an outlandish story claiming to be none other than Lady Montayne, Garrett’s wife. She has no idea that Garrett’s wife supposedly disappeared with another man years before. But, Garrett is intrigued by her and plays along with her story. This is just the beginning of the love story of Madeleine and Garrett. This couple will face many obstacles from their pasts and their trust issues…not to mention Madeleine runs away and joins a troubadour group. Alas, this isn’t the end for them. You will have to read on to discover the fate of Madeleine and Garrett. Music For My Soul is considered a historical romance, but it is so much more. It really isn’t your typical historical romance. There is a great deal of history dealing with troubadours which I found interesting. The romance between the two wasn’t rushed at all, and it really couldn’t be. They both have been hurt badly by their spouses. Yet, this isn’t the only obstacle. The church and the law see them both as still married, so they really question what kind of future they could have together. This was a beautifully written romance about second chances at happiness. There was great sexual tension between them, yet there was a sweetness as well. It was a great, realistic historical romance that had a lot of substance to it. If you aren’t a fan of historical romance, you really should give this one a try. You won’t be disappointed. I look forward to reading more of Lauren Linwood’s books in the future. ***This review was written for Devilishly Delicious Book Reviews.***
