I was interested in reading it because I had my thyroid destroyed by radioactive iodine after a bout with Graves disease (which, surprisingly, was actually mentioned, although not in detail). I'm not sure what to think of this book. While Dr. Hotze points out many things that make sense and ring true for me (over-prescription of antidepressants; not feeling well on synthetic thyroid hormones; and the pervasive control of pharmaceutical companies over American medicine), other points of his made no sense (for example, that most hypothyroid people in the past would have been killed by childhood illness—what? I was expecting a good explanation to come but none came). All in all, I did appreciate his explanations of hypothyroidism. I'm not sure I'm 100% on board with him, though, because his marketing shows signs of quackery. Usually from Goodreads giveaways, I just receive a book from the publisher, possibly with a marketing letter. This time I received a strange, slightly misleading letter first, which I ignored (and then my book did show up eventually). Sign #2 of quackery: this book seems to have several generic reviews/ratings from puppet accounts. Scroll down and look: there are several two-line, five-star reviews that sound nearly identical, and when you click on the accounts, the only books they have added are Mr. Hotze's. It just makes me question an author's credibility when they seem to feel the need to market this way. Let readers speak for themselves; don't pollute the rating system with fakes. All in all, this book has convinced me that I want to change endocrinologists (which I have been thinking about for years), and possibly try Armour. Because as much as the doctors told me I'd feel totally normal on Synthroid after my Graves disease "treatment," I've never regained my previous energy level since, even on higher doses of Synthroid and with good lab results. After six years of "meh" results, perhaps it's time to try something else. Wish me luck trying to find an endo who will presribe Armour, though.

Dr. Hotze does a great job at explaining how your thyroid gland controls your metabolism and many other factors that can effect your immune system. He explains that you need both T3 (active) and T4(inactive) thyroid hormones to be working at optimal levels and how many synthetic thyroid only replenishes the T4 unlike bio-identical thyroid that is a more sufficient supplement for your body. Dr. Hotze makes simple facts about hormones that should be easy to understand for anyone (especially other doctors) however we are led to believe that the solution should be much more complicated. It makes sense that when women have children or as they age their hormones will change, this is why it is important to naturally restore those hormones (this also includes balancing the progesterone and estrogen hormones) into our body to live optimally. Basically just putting back in what you had lost naturally. Dr. Hotze recommends the balancing of estrogen and progesterone and how these hormones can play a large role with hypothyroidism. Replenishing your body with thyroid has also been linked with decreasing the risk of heath attacks associated with heart disease and decreasing individuals odds of obesity. Many drugs given to treat these two diseases have worst side effects than living with the illness to begin with and normally once you are one drug it leads to you taking more to cover the problems that you incur from the previous drug. In the example of Mary's mother who had cancer, it is astounding to me to hear she was on over 26 medications that counteracted with each other. Unnecessary overmedication does not cause hypothyroidism but is a result to when hypothyroidism goes misdiagnosed (for things such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome). These overmedication's are directly a result to pharmaceutical companies that make millions of dollars to sell prescription drugs to doctors and monopolize the entire industry without thinking about the side effects it can cause for the patients. Patients also need to take responsibility for knowing what they are putting into their body. Even though, your doctor may prescribe you something you should take into consideration all side effects of the drug and how the good (not really good) out weigh the bad (the really bad!)

I read Hypothyroidism, Health & Happiness: The Riddle of Illness Revealed and found it to be a very interesting book with some good insights. Steven Hotze believes that our country is over-prescribing drugs that drug reps are pushing to our doctors and not paying enough attention to symptoms that people are having. I am hypothyroid and have been taking synthroid for some time. Dr. Hotze believes that when treating hypothyroidism we should be treating T3 and T4 and Synthroid only treats T3. My local library had many books on hypothyroidism and I will be continuing to study up on this subject so that I can informed on my condition and be sure that I am proactive in getting the best care needed.

As someone who has experienced being “sick and tired of being sick and tired” for years due to the failures of traditional medicine and the lies of Big Pharma, I can honestly say that Dr. Hotze’s book feels like an exclamation mark on my own tale of living with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism, Health, & Happiness, was a great follow up to Hormones, Health, and Happiness. Even though I am familiar with low thyroid and the impact on other hormones (i.e. cortisol, progesterone, estrogen, testosterone), this book helped me understand how hypothyroidism is related to heart issues, diabetes, fibromyalgia, etc. If I wasn't identifying with someone's story in the book for myself, I was thinking about a family member or friend who has or are experiencing these symptoms. Several points that Dr. Hotze pointed out in this book really shocked me. How is it that we, Americans, consume more than forty percent of the world’s pharmaceutical drugs and we only make up five percent of the world’s population? Could it be that we are constantly bombarded with pharmaceutical ads? As Dr. Hotze says we have to become fully engaged participants in life because all this information is worthless without action. If you are being treated for hypothyroidism, know someone who is, you should read this book. If you are still having symptoms and your doctor tells you your T3 and T4 levels are normal, you MUST read this book. This book does an excellent job of breaking down what the problem(s) may be. The book makes the case that hypothyroidism is common in the US, often un or misdiagnosed, and is ineffectively treated in many cases. It also explains what other options or choices are available. The book makes the case that hypothyroidism is common in the US, often un or misdiagnosed, and is ineffectively treated in many cases. It also explains what other options or choices are available. The book starts off with a brief history of the discovery and treatment of hypothyroidism, which is quite interesting. Then the author explains hypothyroidism, how it effects the body and how the body interacts with the thyroid. The language is easy for the layman to understand and each chapter has the main points neatly summarized. The author continues to explain lab testing and what the lab tests do or don't reveal. Symptoms are listed and the origins of them explained. Type 1 and Type 2 Hypothyroidism is covered, as is the effects of fluoride, iodine, hormones, gluten and cortisol in relation to thyroid function. The book really contains all the information one wishes their own doctor would take the time to explain about hypothyroidism, but doesn't. This book is a easy, sometimes shocking and informative read to educate oneself. The book has a holistic viewpoint, recommendations for a natural types of treatment, some interesting photographs and a Low Thyroid Function checklist. DISCLOSURE: I was provided a complimentary copy of this book, but be assured it is an honest review. I do not know or owe anything to the author/publisher.

In this book, Dr. Hotze lays it all out and gets to the bottom line of just how much of an impact low thyroid function has been and is making not only in the lives of millions of Americans, but all over the world. I received this book as a first read. It's well organized and informative. It has a good breakdown of how the thyroid works and historical treatments for thyroid disorders. It also ties in other illnesses that tend to affect those with hypothyroidisms (sinus infections, allergies, etc). It's curious that the medical community opts to treat hypothyroidism with synthetic thyroid hormone instead of natural desiccated thyroid. Hotze seems much more knowledgeable than most of my endocrinologists. Thi I received this book as a first read. It's well organized and informative. This book is great! Dr. Hotze does an awesome job of explaining the many symptoms of low thyroid as well as the dangers of misdiagnosis and treatment. Type 2 Hypothyroidism is hereditary and many people in my family have the problem and haven't done anything about it because they are afraid of alternative treatment. Main stream medicine really misses the mark on this disease and is doing our health care system a disservice by ignoring the simple solution. Get the book! You are so worth it! This book is great! Dr. Hotze's book is encouraging and motivating! There is no more need to keep traveling from doctor to doctor and being prescribed medication after medication!! Dr. Hotze explains that these symptoms such as mood swings, brain fog, depressions, weight loss/ gain, and more are, in most cases, directly related to hormone and thyroid imbalances. I absolutely recommend this book for women and men who are looking to get their lives back NATURALLY. Dr. Hotze's book is encouraging and motivating! I am almost done with this book. I like it because it describes things that I am going through with my hypothyroidism. I am going to try the Natural dessicated porcine thyroid as recommended. I was glad to read of a couple options. At one point I was told that the natural Armour was no longer available, but I checked with pharmacies and it is, along with other brands. I thought that the description of how thyroid hormones and other hormones work together was very insightful
