I don't know exactly what to say about this series. There section on why music has healing power wasn't as strong as I expected, though it seemed like there is research out there. I wanted more information on why music helps and how it can be used. What I ended up reading was a book that seemed to give a lot of ancedotal evidence and assume that primitive sounds which vibrate through the whole register were more powerful than other sounds. What I ended up reading was a book that seemed to give a lot of ancedotal evidence and assume that primitive sounds which vibrate through the whole register were more powerful than other sounds. The worst part of this program is that there is no clear guidance on how to use the music practices. The hour long music practice is divided into several chapters, but there is no indication if the listener is to listen to one for one issue and a different one for another or if the listener is supposed to listen to it from start to finish every time. I listened to the practice twice and both times, it seemed to agitate me more than provide any sense of healing. At some points, the music was enjoyable and at other points, it was less so. I would have continued to listen to the practice over and over if 1) I had any guidance on how and when to use it and 2) it was clear to me what effects to expect and when. I needed this book to be better flushed out. I was the most invested in this one of all of the Dr. Weil programs like this and it fell flat. I did walk away knowing that binural beats are a thing, but in the 7+ years of using them, I haven't found them to have much of an impact, so it leaves me feeling more mixed about this book.

The music is absolutely amazing, it's especially wonderful to hear some unusual instruments for a length of time like the didjerdu (no idea how to spell that) the Tibetan bowls, four chambered flute and several others that I don't know what they are. In the last two tracks are whale sounds which I particularly enjoy. Also the first disc in informative and has fascinating information, plus Kimba Arem has a lovely speaking voice that is pleasant to listen to. This is a MUST READ before-during-after surgery. I love Dr. Gaynor and Dr. Weil and their research in sound healing. I was terrified to face another surgery. I had put myself in a meditative state after my second c-section with Dr. Gaynor's CD. I found Self-Healing and used this book on the way to the hospital. I continued wearing my headphones while my husband was my spokesperson when I was checking-in. I had gotten permission from my surgeon to bring my phone in and play this book (on Audible) This is a MUST READ before-during-after surgery. I truly believe my healing time was significantly reduced by this book and healing music. The doctors were very impressed. Be well everyone!

First half is Weil and Arem discussing sound and frequencies, and the second half is just music (flutes, whale songs, etc.), sounds meant to calm. Would have preferred more information around sound and frequencies, both scientific and spiritual use/mention throughout history.

I enjoy Weil's professional take on medical subjects with an openness to fringe topics. This topic was interesting, though there was nothing really earth shattering. Does anyone out there not know that we are affected by sound and the music we listen to? I enjoy Weil's professional take on medical subjects with an openness to fringe topics.
