Vienna's Albertina Museum is home to the world's most comprehensive collection of works by Albrecht Durer. Durer's genius for drawing and painting rivaled that of his Italian contemporaries, and his exquisitely detailed and delicately colored watercolors and prints elevated these to new levels of accomplishment. This book includes many of Durer's most renowned masterpieces: his watercolors The Great Piece of Turf, A Blue Roller, and Left Wing of a Blue Roller; his chiaroscuro drawings Praying Hands and An Elderly Man of 93 Years; and his precocious silverpoint Self-Portrait at 13--along with numerous other works from the Albertina's collection. Beautifully reproduced, these images convey Durer's fascination with the world around him and his extraordinary ability to bring that world to life.

Albrecht Dürer is one of the most famous painters in the late 1400s and early 1500s in Germany. I did not know this until I shared that I was lousy at drawing with a friend. After hearing this she insisted I take the book and read it, hoping it would offer inspiration (and it does, especially seeing Dürer's progression). After a somewhat lengthy and dry 43-page, superficial introduction to Albrecht Dürer and his works (I must admit this is the major reason I procrastinated on reading the book, mi Albrecht Dürer is one of the most famous painters in the late 1400s and early 1500s in Germany. I did not know this until I shared that I was lousy at drawing with a friend. After hearing this she insisted I take the book and read it, hoping it would offer inspiration (and it does, especially seeing Dürer's progression). After a somewhat lengthy and dry 43-page, superficial introduction to Albrecht Dürer and his works (I must admit this is the major reason I procrastinated on reading the book, mistakenly thinking the remainder of the book would be this way), I made it to Dürer's arts and descriptions and progressed through the text at a rapid pace. I found his "Great Piece of Turf," "Praying Hands" with the "Head of the Apostle Looking Up" (both were originally one according to the text on page 180), "Young Hare," "Knight. Death and Devil," and "Saint Jerome In His Study" to be most compelling. I found his signature (an upper case "A" with a smaller uppercase "D" centered under the A's horizontal mark) especially creative, as he eventually started displaying it within the his scenes. For example, he would incorporate it on a sign board which became a material item within some of his works. Sometimes, he would incorporate it on another object within the scene. I generally prefer his works sometime after 1500 as he became more skilled. Although Dürer always had an aptitude for detail, his later works seemed to have better arranged as he devoted himself to his craft. I noticed the the use of light, shading, focal points, depth, major/minor details became much more focused and balanced as he studied and created. As a final note, this book also compares and contrasts works of other artists to compare them to Dürer's. They also include previously disputed works of Dürer since some of his works are unsigned. I would recommend this text to anyone interested in general art, or the works of Albrecht Dürer.
