Finding God in the Bible: What Crazy Prophets, Fickle Followers, and Dangerous Outlaws Reveal about Friendship with God, by Darren Wilson, looked like just the evangelical fare I like to avoid. It's fine, like dark chocolate, if that's your thing. But if you aren't so much a fan, then...well...not. Or that's what I thought. As I got into it, I couldn't help that my eyebrows raised a bit. It's fine, like dark chocolate, if that's your thing. But if you aren't so much a fan, then...well...not. Or that's what I thought. As I got into it, I couldn't help that my eyebrows raised a bit. And then I found myself eager to keep reading. And with that, I have this to say: I have really enjoyed this book. I had to get past the fact that the Bible as God's Word holds up to all sorts of abuse, including hack-jobs like me taking a stab at interpretation that's nowhere close to historically accurate but that still work. Because that's a bit of how this book is written: it's a very modern look at the Old Testament. I was raised to love the Bible, and it's recently been very heavy on my heart that I need to be better about sharing the wealth of Bible stories with my children and with the kids I teach in religious education classes. It's also been on my heart that I need to spend some time of my own with God's Word. Not reading about it. Not considering interpretations of it. But sitting down and reading it. And this book inspires that in me. Mission accomplished. But I think what this book sets out to do is different than what it did for me. I think it's a laudable goal, though, and one that the Bible can do. This book sets out to make God approachable, to define him a bit so that we can see him in a more real way and even be friends with him. To that end, Darren Wilson uses images, language, and techniques that I found startling and effective. (But I drink a lot of coffee.) He's not out to be a Scripture scholar. He's reading the Bible as a regular guy and then diving deeper. This book is challenging. It's hard to read in parts. And I think it has shifted my approach to the Bible in a good way.

I had never heard of this author until I won this book through the Goodreads giveaway site and, now, I can't get enough! About the Author: Darren Wilson is the founder of Wanderlust Productions. He has an MFA in screenwriting from Regent University. He is the director of the feature films Finger of God, Furious Love, and the newly released Father of Lights and The Greatest Flight. Wilson has been interviewed on It's Supernatural with Sid Roth and he was recently named one of the "21 Emerging Leaders of Tomorrow's Church" by Charisma magazine. He and his wife, Jenell, have three children and live near Chicago, Illinois. Learn more at www.wpfilm.com. My Review: Darren Wilson, a well known director of many Christian oriented films including Father of Lights has written a very informative book on how well we actually know God, entitled Finding God in the Bible. Darren has taken several well placed situations in the Bible and really taken them apart to decipher and show us why they were included in the Bible in the first place. Judging by the way God has chosen to start with the creation of the world and how He spoke things into being can determine that He is a very creative God. Or how God probably had many more things happen with Moses than was ever revealed, why would that be so? The author has given a very meaty account of what he believes a friendship with God should be all about. He helps us come to a better understanding for a more in depth study of this God that we are deathly fearful of but long to be in the arms of. A God that has a love that knows no bounds and that beckons us to get to know Him more. **Disclosure** This book was sent to me for free for my honest review from Chosen Books.

I absolutely love it when a book I chose to read comes around at just the right time. Stumbling through books that I don't enjoy is not my style, I don't have that kind of time to waste, and it always amazes me how God can use books to speak to my heart and reveal things I didn't know were there. From the introduction this book had me in its grasp. The author, Darren Wilson, grew up in church like me and was pretty much freaked out by many of the stories in the Bible. This fear kept him from really seeing God for who He is and what His real purpose is in doing the things He does. The book takes the reader through various major characters and the weird stories that maybe like me, you never really understood either. I mean God does some pretty unusual stuff and asks His people to do some weird things. Don't you ever ask yourself why? Darren is honest enough to say yes. What it all really boils down to is that God desires to have a close relationship with us. He loves us and wants us to love Him back. Friendship is what He is after, not a casual acquaintance. keeping God at arm's length is what most of us do, because we don't really want to know Him that well. He's a little scary and some of us have had misconceptions about His motives for so long that we really don't trust Him either. Finding God in the Bible will help you to reach past that initial impression and see who God really wants to be to us, His chosen people. A closer relationship with Him and and understanding of His unfathomable love can be the result if you really let the message of this book sink in and grab a hold of your heart and mind. As a fan of Darren Wilson’s movies, I really enjoyed his first book, Filming God, which gave some additional insights and back story to his movies and calling. But this was a big shift for Darren, and it was great to see his friendship with God blossom into a new area. Darren is raw and transparent in his own faith challenges, and this book has an “everyman” perspective that’s refreshing and relatable. I actually really liked this book. At first, it seems silly and cliche. But when you get into the meat of the book? WOW. My perspective of the Lord and how I read my Bible have changed because of this book. I question myself and how I feel when I don't respond well to something I've read. I ask myself, "What am I missing that I respond so badly?" "What am I not understanding about God?" Highly recommend this book. I actually really liked this book. At first, it seems silly and cliche. I am reviewing "Finding God in the Bible" and the film "Father of Lights" both by Darren Wilson. Darren Wilson is a man who grew up in the Christian church, but didn't have a relationship with God. There were many things about God and the Bible that scared Darren, or didn't make sense to him. Darren Wilson is a man who grew up in the Christian church, but didn't have a relationship with God. There were many things about God and the Bible that scared Darren, or didn't make sense to him. When he was close to thirty, Darren found himself dissatisfied with his life, and creatively blocked. He was also angry with anything that had to do with God or church. Out of desperation, he gave into his wife's entreaties, and asked God for help. From that moment foreword, his life changed completely. Darren's plea led him to God, and spiritual worlds opened up to Darren he had never expected. He saw angels, healings and met a man who heard God literally talk to him every day. His career went a new direction, that of a film maker. Although Darren had never had a desire to be a film maker, and didn't feel he had the training or equipment to do it, he made three films that were all very popular--all because he followed the urgings from God. He also wrote books, and went to many places around the world. But his biggest desire in his life was to become a friend of God. Both the book, "Finding God in the Bible," and the film, "Father of Lights," document Darren's amazing journey being a friend of God. He chronicles his about-face opinion of the Christian church, the Bible, and the greatest desire in his life. He records astonishing people, events and situations. Many people become Christ followers during his journeys. Although he does not agree with some of the ways other Christians try to bring people to Christ, he prays for his fellow Christians, even ones with opposite methods than his. Both the book and the movie really cause one to think. As a Christian, it caused me to reflect about the best way to have a relationship with God, and to be a Christ follower. Darren Wilson was very sincere in his writing of this book and this film. I give them both 4 stars. The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book and film through Chosen Books and Bethany House Publishing for the purpose of review. Finding God in the Bible was written to educate readers on numerous different Biblical stories that can be a little challenging to grasp the whole truth found in them. Darren was a professor of writing and he knew God had declared that he was the one who needed to be a filmmaker and produce a movie entitled, Finger of God. He revealed how God opened supernatural doors in filming this amazing film that was very eye-opening. He explored the story of creation, Adam and Eve, Moses, Elisha, David, Saul, Joseph, and so many more. One of my favorite chapters was the story of Joseph and how even though his brothers had evil motives in getting rid of their brother and selling him as a slave. God had an even bigger plan for his life and he wasn’t done with him just yet. Joseph’s destiny couldn’t have been fulfilled if his brother’s hadn’t committed such a horrible crime against him and the wrong accusations made by Potiphar’s wife lead him into helping his brother’s when a famine hit. God turned evil into good! This is only one example of what this book will teach you. I would recommend this awe-inspiring book on the faithfulness of God and the miraculous leading God has had in people’s lives. This book taught me a great deal about how God wants an intimate relationship with His beloved children and it’s evident in the truths offered in scriptures. This book was astonishing in the overall content and I liked how Darren was very real about his avoidance of making a film about how much God loves us and how he wants a true friendship with us. I immensely realized in reading this book that I need to focus more on building my intimate friendship with my loving Creator. I highly recommend this book if you’re struggling in your relationship with God, this will get you back on the right track! I would also highly suggest this book for new believers because it will help educate them in the direction for their life! “I received this book free from the publisher through the Bethany House Publishers/ Chosen book review bloggers program.”

By all appearances, this may seem like an odd title for a book: Finding God in the Bible. The Bible is all about Him, and it is His Word, so who needs to find God in the Bible of all places? I'm a guy who has struggled all of my life with the wrong view of what God is like, and I found this book refreshing and helpful. The author does a great job of not just giving a unique perspective on several Bible stories that are old hat to most of us, but also does a great job of bringing the truth home of what God is all about, wanting a relationship with us, and not just a relationship, but friendship. Some non-fiction books are easier to read than others, and this definitely falls into the easy to read category. It doesn't belabor heavy theological or doctrinal truths, but in a simple and interesting way makes the reader want a real relationship with God, not just a shallow religion of serving a far off God, and gives us a look at some of the Biblical characters who were God's friends. I would definitely recommend this book. It is worth reading and re-reading.

Darren Wilson in his book Finding God in the Bible writes about man's friendship with God. Wilson believes it is through Bible stories that we are able to learn aspects about God's character. Friendship, in my mind, implies somewhat of a relationship between peers and a free will choice. Finding God was a surprisingly long book considering the subject matter. Unfortunately, the length is due more to a lot of personal narrative regarding the author's film-making career than to actual analysis or reflection on the Bible. Although Wilson's read-between-the-lines approach to understanding God's character in the Bible narrative contains the occasional nugget of thought-provoking ideas, it's mired in his open theist understanding of God. Then it dawned on me-yes some of the points are simplistic i.e. staying in communication with God, "How do you know what to do and when? It's simple. Wilson takes a fresh look at the stories in the Old Testament. He himself is a story teller and film maker so knows what to look for. I was impressed with his insights. The character and nature of God revealed in how He interacts with His created beings. God's first act toward the man He created is a kiss. I've long since finished this and given this away to one of my sister's friends who is a new Christian, but it is still one of the most inspiring and eye-opening novels I've read last year. It really helped me to see and understand what God's character was like through His encounters with ordinary humans like us. Brilliant book, great insights into Bible stories, especially ones where God seems to overreact, like why Moses wasn't allowed into the Promised Land, etc. It's a book also where Darren really says what we're thinking but don't want to discuss, and he explores and challenges these thoughts. Thought provoking read, easy to follow. The concept of a friendship with God is one that has caught on more lately and Wilson's book is a good addition. I found his focus on the Old Testament to be the most helpful as it is not nearly as written about as Jesus himself. Good fast read. Lucky enough to win this via a goodreads, first reads contest. This book is a witty, smart take on God ( Not religion for the MOST part ) but definitely not genius.
