Write Bloody Publishing Drunks and other poems is prose based around AA meetings and a mans story to sobriety. Kinda has that feeling when Jim Carroll's words are read out loud. Poems for Ruth is amazing and touching. The authors last few chapters are very well written. I'm not a drinker and don't need any AA meetings. I don't even know why I wanted to read this. Maybe the word "drunk" caught my eye. Glad I read recommended reading. Here is a few lines from book: "She wakes up later now. For a long time, the energy level was the same, the days were getting shorter. Now you can detect some changes in the level of activity. Sometimes there is pain; you cannot help but see it. She would hide it if she could." "We forgive you that your body has begun to resist the demands you make on it in our behalf. The time has come to rest upon your laurels. The canvas is painted now. There is no room for one more brushstroke. Time to sit back and gaze upon what you have made."

Jack passed away this past month and this book is a big part of his legacy. In these poems, he tells his personal story of recovery and the universal story which will be recognizable by many.

Honest. Brutal. Uplifting. I would recommend this book to anyone...but I'm buying it for all of the alcoholics in my life. Honest. Brutal. Uplifting. I would recommend this book to anyone...but I'm buying it for all of the alcoholics in my life.

A work of genius. Have heard from many New England poets that Jack McCarthy is one of their most important poets. Finally got to read "Drunks". Just powerful. Really gets into what AA and recovery means. Extraordinary work which I actually recommended to my therapist. Would love to read more Jack McCarthy, I wish I saw him perform live. RIP. I bought this book some years ago because of the poem "Drunks". I don't know what I was looking for exactly, perhaps simple validation for my anger, but it isn't what I found. The book is worth a read, it might surprise you. I bought this book some years ago because of the poem "Drunks".
