Popular Mechanics knows: there are two types of people in the world—those able to fix whatever goes bust, and those who beg the first group for help when something goes wrong. But it doesn’t have to be that way, because this easy-to-follow guide will give anyone the basics to tackle those frustrating (and sometimes nerve-wracking) quandaries that crop up around the house: Popular Mechanics knows: there are two types of people in the world—those able to fix whatever goes bust, and those who beg the first group for help when something goes wrong. They range from the serious to the merely annoying, but every one is cause for concern. So, whether the issue is a fast repair for a running toilet or a leaking pipe, or a simple, inexpensive way to keep deer from pillaging the garden, it’s all in here.

I've flipped through piles of home improvement/do it yourself books lately but this one has been the shining jewel of the whole lot. While it's small shape seems like it would just be a quick flip through book it is jammed packed with a ton of information from prevention tips, emergency fixes, and more long terms projects. It's one of the few books of this sort that shows you how to do things without having to buy any specialized tools, and most fixes are long lasting and budget minded. There is no "filler" and it reads like the feeling you have when you run across something useful on the internet and you bookmark it for reference later. This is a book I had picked up from my library, and plan to purchase it for reference use later in my home. I would highly recommend it for any home owner whether newbie or veteran.

A compact spiral-bound quick reference for small repairs and DIY around the home. Each tip or how-to is about half a page, often with an illustration - some of which are useful, some of which are merely decorative. I didn't find it as interesting as the other Popular Mechanics book Complete Home How-To but the other book is also six times the size of this one. All the tips are numbered but there is no table of contents to easily locate them - you have to refer to the page numbers in the index or A compact spiral-bound quick reference for small repairs and DIY around the home. All the tips are numbered but there is no table of contents to easily locate them - you have to refer to the page numbers in the index or just flip through, and the labels on some of them in an attempt to be amusing just make it harder to locate relevant tips. That said, there's a lot of useful information in here and whilst it's not as good a quick reference as it could have been, it's still a useful book to have around.

This is a must have book for the mechanically inept. I have always heard the axiom...Duct Tape will fix anything. And have found this to be a very useful item, but it cannot fix everything. What do you do when your chain breaks and you have neither the time nor the finances to go and replace it immediately? That padlock on the old shed rusted shut, you need to get into the shed but don't want to cut the lock as you still need it? Drain clogged but your plunger not up to the task?
