Margot Davenport’s life has been turned upside down. She divorced her husband two years ago and lost her corporate attorney job soon after, but none of that compares to the heartbreak she’s dealing with now – the death of her brother, Johnny, who she adored. Jake Preston doesn’t have long to live, thanks to an experiment gone wrong. He needs to get his hands on the antidote, but the last known person to have it is his friend and co-worker, Johnny Davenport. Unaware of Johnny’s death, Jake shows Margot Davenport’s life has been turned upside down. Unaware of Johnny’s death, Jake shows up at Margot’s front door looking for him, and a place to stay. When he learns about Johnny’s car accident, which he’s pretty sure wasn’t an accident at all, he’s even more convinced that the cure he’s looking for can be found somewhere in Margot’s house. Maybe it was the way-too-much alcohol she’d been drinking to deaden the emotional pain of her brother’s death, or the fact that Jake is a living, breathing connection to her beloved Johnny, whatever the reason, Margot reluctantly agrees to rent Jake a room for the couple of weeks he'll be in town. Odd things start happening around the house, things she can’t explain and when she starts to think that maybe Johnny’s ghost has come to visit, she realizes she’s really losing it. But when Malcolm, her ex-husband, shows up desperate to find some file Johnny had been working on, Margot is certain there’s much more going on than meets the eye, and that Jake isn’t who, or what, he claims to be. Shrouded in Darkness is book one of the The Shrouded Series, and I'm glad I was given the opportunity to read it. Jake Preston is the kind of hero I can love – tormented, honorable and strong, yet vulnerable and desperate, but I had a tough time connecting with Margot or sympathizing with her over the things she was going through. The story was good and kept me guessing, wondering who the bad guys were and what they were hiding. I don't want to spoil the story for you, so I can't go into a lot of detail, but I do want to mention that, in my opinion, Shrouded in Darkness felt more sci-fi than paranormal, though not futuristic or techy. The bottom line - If you enjoy mysteries with a twist you might want to check this one out. The writing isn't without flaws, but Shrouded in Darkness is an entertaining read, and left me wanting to know more about the dark world Jake Preston and Johnny Davenport had found themselves caught up in. My thanks to the author, H.D. Thomson, who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 3.25/5 stars

Thomson does a great job of keeping the reader guessing. Margot Davenport has known tragedy. Having divorced her husband two years ago, losing her corporate career job and now suffering through the loss of her beloved brother Johnny. Margot is living a nightmare that she hasn't woken up from. Jake Preston is also trapped in a living nightmare. Only his nightmare has one final end-Death. This is because of an experiment that backfired at a Pharmaceutical company he worked for. His only chance of survival is getting the antidote, which was last known to be in the hands of Johnny Davenport. Not knowing of Johnny's passing, he shows up at Margot's house telling her he needs to speak to her brother. She tells him of the accident and allows Jake to stay in one of the rooms for him to rent. From there strange thing begin to happen. Margot begins to question the things Jake say, and later learns that truth of what who and what Jake is and how her brother brother's death was no accident. Shrouded in Darkness is a great Paranormal Suspence novel. I loved Jake! If the hero is a tortured soul, and needs to find redemption. I enjoy it and Jake is just that. I also like the plot. It was fast-paced, thrilling with the romance element thrown into the mystery. There is a great balance of action and dialogue, it doesn't slow down. The only thing that will say is that Margot was a hard character to connect to. She is suffering through everything but for me, to keep referring to that just didn't help me sympathize with her. Instead I just got tired. Overall I loved the story, plot, and the overall theme that this series will be taking. I am happy I was given a chance to read this novel and will be on the look out for the others in the series.

Anxiety is a paranormal, romantic suspense novel and for followers of such novels provides all the requisite doses and dollops of romance-much of it steamy, plot twists, mystery, duplicitous characters and tortured love interests. Toss all that together, along with a scientific experiment gone wrong and you have Anxiety. The book is a quick read as it flows well and keeps you guessing as to character motivations and secrets as you learn more about each one. The book is well written and well edited. Anxiety is a full-length novel that was originally released in episodic fashion. By the title, I thought it was 6 distinct short stories that dealt with the topic of anxiety, but no, it is one novel. It flows really seamlessly, actually. I couldn't detect where the original breaks were. The romance scenes border on the line between R and, maybe, NC17, for me anyway, and a little more than I like to see in print. However it is nowhere near as graphic as the pornographic trash being peddled as so-called "sexy romance". Still, definitely not one for the kiddies. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

BOOK REVIEW: Anxiety by H.D. Thomson is a whole lot of greatness wrapped up in one book! It's erotica meets supernatural meets suspense meets romance! Our protagonist, Margot, is a lost soul. She drowns her sorrows with wine and prefers her solitude in the comfort of her own home in a room with walls shelved in books that surround her. Jake is a man with a conscience that gets mixed in with the wrong businessmen in a company that he has to flee. I would have liked a little bit more character development for each of them, but I believe the focus was meant to be more on the connection between them. Margot and Jake's connection wasn't just a perfect combination of two sexual beings' chemistry, it was life changing and life SAVING for both of them. Here you have two people, a decade apart in age with a similar childhood upbringing, who have both lost something critical in their lives. For Margot, it was her brother and her job, and for Jake it was his mere existence. These two, brought together because of Margot's brother, need each other at the most crucial time in both of their lives. Drawn to each other in every way, their desire gets the best of them and they are thrown into something neither of them is prepared for. The author, H.D. Thomson, knows how to describe a love scene like the best of them! Phew. . .Steeeeamy!

Anxiety really gave me just that, anxiety. But in a totally good way!!! Margot was really down and out on life, especially after the death of her brother, but that all changed when Jake showed up. Jake is desperate in a race against time to save himself from an experiment gone horribly wrong. Where he believes the secret to his cure lies is in Margot's house. Margot is being very skeptical, with good reason. You can bet with reading this book there will be trust issues, murder, suspense, danger and Anxiety really gave me just that, anxiety. I loved that mixed in with all the suspense and mystery of it, was a sci-fi'ish, paranormal side to it. Would definitely suggest this book to anyone who likes mysteries along with romance. This was the first book I've read from the author and I LOVED IT!!! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

This had an intriguing storyline, involving genetic research and a missing formula. The storyline revolves around genetic research and a dramatic result which occurs after a formula is destroyed. It was a nice touch that, when he was searching the library, Jake touched on mythology about vampires, because it automatically led your thoughts down that path - it wasn't, but I'm not going to say what happened with the formula - but I thought it was a nice twist.

Tedious Although the plot was OK off and on, the story dragged. I personally would not read the sequel and feel it should have been blended into the original story line.

This book felt so much longer than it actually was. There was intrigue, darkness, danger, mystery, secrets, betrayal, murder, and passion. And while that sounds like a great list of things to have in a suspense romance, it's only a good thing if each piece is done well. The intrigue is probably the most frustrating part. There was intrigue, darkness, danger, mystery, secrets, betrayal, murder, and passion. And while that sounds like a great list of things to have in a suspense romance, it's only a good thing if each piece is done well. The intrigue is probably the most frustrating part. There are a number of players and not all of them are known in the beginning. Obviously, right? We can tell who the true villain is and then a couple more get thrown in at the end to satisfy...something. Not trying to be vague, but the extra players really could just be omitted and the story might actually be better. We also have Jack, the guy who we hope is good but aren't sure of at first. However, we do have the benefit of having his point of view and can see that aside from being a complicit-by-silence kind of guy in his past, he's not really all bad. There's a lot more to it but it's pretty formula and not a spoiler to say that, in my opinion. I mean, there's a surprise/twist that comes at the very, very end and I certainly won't spoil that mess for anyone. Darkness and danger go hand in hand here. Not only is there the metaphorical darkness in the soul and mind, but also the physical darkness that gives an ironic clarity to a different kind of danger. Not exactly the danger you'd expect, though. There's a lot of allusions to something much more sinister than what we see plays out. Just a lot of insecurity and crazy science gone wrong...or right? Mystery and secrets obviously go hand in hand here too, but in a much less effective way. We actually never get any concrete answers to pretty much anything. The serum is dangerous, yes, but how? Why? When we see what it does at like, the 80% mark we can infer the reason behind keeping it a secret and knowing it's a dangerous thing in the wrong hands but we're led to believe that there's going to be like a plague or an explosion or something. Misleading information is not mystery, it's just setting us up for confusion. A lot of secrets do get revealed but the way it's done is just shy of formulaic monologuing from a surprise source and even then it doesn't really answer everything. Betrayal, murder, both of those things are there and the betrayal part was kind of a surprise. There are hints that something else, someone else, has a part in all the bad drama but those mostly get brushed under the rug with all the other craziness running around. And then there's the passion. Passion can be sexual, it can also come from anger. There's plenty of both. From Margot we also get righteous indignation and vehement accusations and denial. Between Jack and Margot it's clear from near the beginning that there's going to be some bedroom passion and I can't blame them. With all the physical describing they do and the intense circumstances surrounding them it's pretty inevitable. Whether it's wise and/or something that will last beyond all the drama is another thing altogether. While her dealing with all the turmoil around her with liberal consumption of alcohol numbs her for a short while, it doesn't help her use her very intelligent brain. There are numerous instances where she doesn't use her brain, she acts like a damsel in distress, and her drowning in wine gets in the way of figuring out what in the world is going on around her. I feel like the alcoholism thing was too much. Her "need" for the oblivion that comes from drink I can understand, to a point, but when it becomes the focus for many, many scenes, it detracts from what the plot is actually trying to achieve. Overall there were so many moments that distracted from the point of the story, didn't delve deeply into character development, added too much drama, and never got answered that I had a really hard time finishing the story. It was slow until everything blew up right at the end. We're left with some mystery left over that segues into the next set of stories for another pivotal character, which is fine, but it's the vague answers that don't satisfy what drew us in in the first place that leaves me wondering why I didn't just move on to the next book on my TBR list. I can't recommend the story despite being very intrigued by the synopsis. I'm also going to admit that if I get a chance to read Johnny's story, I will. I apparently enjoy literary abuse that way.

Margot💋💔 has a home business of finding old 📚books for people and also putting them into digital format for ebooks. She used to be a lawyer. She has started to have a drinking 🍷 problem, too. When her brother dies, she pretty much gives up. 🍷Wine is her poison of choice. The same day of her brother's funeral, a tall, dark muscled💪 stranger shows up, wanting to rent a room from her, since the local hotels are full of skiers. There is definitely a sexual heat between💋🍆🌋 them from the very beginning, but she tries to keep it from surfacing. He is Jake🐺🍆🌋, and he was a co-worker of her brother and Malcolm, but he is strange. He wears sunglasses👓 at 🌙night and also gloves. He is going into her brother's lab at night and working on his computer. Every day he leaves during the day and disappears. Then Malcolm👹🔫 shows up and threatens her, choking her, until something invisible pulls him off and throws him across the room. Does she have ghosts👻 in the old Victorian house, now, too? This is an awesome book! I loved every crazy, well written page of it! The book has a real story, not just a weak romance plot with a setup for the 👦guy to get the 👧girl. The characters have a real connection to each other and their dialogue is completely natural. I was so totally absorbed in the book📑, that I read it straight through to The end! Great book📑! He brings with him a cloud of mystery and weird events. Margot begins to feel like a ghost, her brother?, may be with her. Is that just the alcohol or is there something really going on? Jake is such a great alpha man who is not afraid to express his feelings and thoughts on his current situation. I love how he is with Margot. This book is hard to classify, at times it felt paranormal and then at others it felt sci-fi. Above all a solid mystery/thriller!

Wow, this was full of anticipation, sorrow, greed, loyalty, love and trust. All of the characters brought all of these emotions to the table to be seen as such. Margot's drinking, grief and unexpected reality were felt by all the characters. Jake's situation is the reason Margot had to make some real changes in her life. Changes that brought out the strength for both of them to survive the reality they had both been victims of. Both trying so hard not to hurt the other, but also themselves. As the story progresses, Margot learns some hard truths about her life and the work her brother and Jake were working on. A great read for lovers of romantic suspense. Interesting story - keeps you wondering. Many tense scenes and even a few romantic (hot) ones. Some of it was a bit far-fetched for my taste but then again, I liked the characters and I will likely read the next one in the series.

Not a great book, but a good enough read. A little paranormal, a little romance, and a little suspense. Characters are believable. Our heroine is drinking a bit too much wine, our hero is staying out of the bright lights. Romance, danger and suspense ensue.
