I like to think of myself as a hard-to-please critic when it comes to my reviews of romance books. For a book in this particular genre to receive a 5-star rating from me, it has to be more than just good. It has to be over-the-top, brought-tears-to-my-eyes, oh-no-she-didn’t, laugh-out-loud, and you-gotta-love-him GOOD! Hooked by Polly Iyer met all of these qualifications and more! I don’t like to compare authors, and, to be honest, Polly Iyer can stand on her own as a very talented author, but for the sake of comparison, Hooked reminded me of a Jackie Collins novel--a much classier Jackie Collins novel with a dynamic plot and engaging characters where not only do you get the inside scoop on what the hero and heroine are thinking but you’re treated to all the inner workings of the other characters involved. I loved it, especially the characters! Inexperienced or virgin heroines are a bit of a bore to me and rather redundant in most romances. I am all for the lady who knows her way around a bedroom and who wears her sexuality with confidence. Tawny Dell fits the criteria on both counts. This reformed high-priced call girl does not disappoint. I liked her. Simple as that. Then, Lincoln Walsh, Linc, was a great hero. Not quite alpha but definitely not a beta. He was the perfect mix of arrogant bastard and thoughtful gentleman. I adored him. But the focus of this novel was not based on or around the romance. I repeat, it was not based on or around the romance between these two characters. Actually the romance placed a backseat to the plot of the story which involved a murdered working girl, a perverted brothel owner, his scheming wife, and a mob boss with morals. I was so caught up in each of these characters and the roles that they played that I wasn’t disappointed when the story shifted away from Tawny and Linc. I would have liked to have read more on their physical relationship, but I can’t even complain there because, in all honesty, the book ended perfectly. Reading more like a suspense/thriller with romantic elements, Hooked by Polly Iyer is definitely going on my keeper shelf! I’ve already recommended it to my two reading buddies. And this is before I even finished reading it! Highly recommended, this is a MUST-READ for romance and thrill-seeking readers alike. (Originally reviewed for Risque Reviews)

It definitely read more like a crime drama and not so much a romance, but there was definitely a burning chemistry between the H/h too. Set in the NY City area, the story focuses on bringing down some of the worst organized criminals. The story includes the most unlikely H/h romance you can imagine: he’s a federal agent that investigates sex crimes, and she is a former high priced call girl. The bad guys get plenty of screen time in this story. It was interesting to see them plan and operate, which is why I think fans of the TV show The Sopranos would enjoy this one. The suspense was a bit predictable, but it really kept me interested. The mysterious death of a call girl early in the book was easy to guess, so I wasn’t the bit surprised when the bad guy was revealed and the plot thickened. I was surprised how much I enjoyed a former call girl as the heroine, but she was great. Tawny was smart, witty, and sincere. She never apologizes for her past, but is certain it will not be her future. Although she is forced to help the Feds bring down an organized sex ring, she was never their puppet. Linc was a solid good guy too, but not so perfect he can’t resist all temptation. Tawny drives him mad with desire, but if they are going to work together he needs to keep it professional. He learns to respect her despite her past, and you know he will never be the same person again. Together they make each other better people, which made their eventual HEA totally believable. I knew this wasn't going to be an erotic read, but I had hopes that this would be some good steamy scenes, so I have to say I was a bit disappointed in that department. It started off with great sizzling chemistry with plenty of sexual tension, but that faded out as the crime aspect took more center stage. The sexual tension and desire between the H/h blooms into a strong emotional bond which was great to experience, but unfortunately that initial heat level faded out. Oddly, the bad guys get more sexual play in the story than our hero, which is why I would classify this one as a crime suspense drama and not a true romance suspense novel. While I did feel the story was long winded in several places and could have benefited by some editing cuts to shorten a few areas, overall this was a great crime drama with a romance element. IT was fast paced, the H/h had great chemistry, and the suspense elements were dark and seedy. As a crime suspense novel, it deserves a solid 4-stars. But as a romantic suspense novel, it’s closer to a 3 star read.

And this is the authors challenge, asking the reader to understand, and maybe empathize, with people whose behavior is frequently on the other side of the law. Benny Cooper, late of wall-street fame and married father of two, has the perfect job; hooked on the glamour of sex, he rents out apartments to beautiful young women, accepts a simple fee for the contracted liaison, and in Benny's mind he's not a pimp, he's simply a business man who gets to sample the wares. But Benny's perfect life comes apart when a young dead prostitute is connected to his high-class establishment and the NYPD sends Lincoln Walsh, sex crimes detective, to get to the bottom of it. Enter Tawny Dell, recently retired and financially independent call girl who takes her secrets and off-shore accounts to an idyllic beach, that is until Lincoln Walsh hooks her with threats of jail for tax evasion unless she helps him find a killer. That there's an instant attraction between the two is expected, but as the story unfolds we get to glimpse into the complex nature of these two people, and though we root for them, it's not until the end that we get to see if their attraction can be sustained in the duality of their life choices. Add a dying mob boss, whose legacy of a legitimate family construction business is about to crumble because one of his own becomes part of the investigation, and last but not least, a stalwart and trusted father figure to Linc whose own agenda will threaten Tawny life. Romance, suspense, humor, tragedy, and yes justice, gives a satisfying end to the book. This author could easily be compared to the likes of Catherine Coulter, but I believe Polly Iyer will soon be America's most popular romantic suspense writer. No for those seeking pure and wholesome stories, this examines the seedy underbelly of the call girl world in New York City, but it isn't what you might expect. This book was full of humor, intrigue, and romance. One of the most amazing parts of this story was the author's ability to transform a sleazy character who would normally be hated by most decent people, into the "normal" world, and have you, the listener, accept and care about him in spite of his misdeeds. I loved the main characters, of course. Lincoln was a guy's guy - wonderful, with a complex and compelling backstory. Tawny was also a great heroine, in spite of her checkered past. You couldn't help but love her, and at least partially understand how she ended up in this world. What really shocked me, however, was how Ms. Iyer made me LOVE the guy who ran the whorehouse (Benny) and even care for the Mafia Kingpin. I never would have imagined this - but this author pulled it off, brilliantly. There was never a moment to rest - Tawny was in danger from the moment the book started. Excellent suspense and tension! I have listened to many narrators. But Ms. Towne's performance was among the VERY best I've ever heard. Every voice was distinct and unique, and I never got confused as to who was speaking. I loved her voices, especially Benny and Lincoln. Outstanding work. I'd like to see more books narrated by this superb actor. I felt sorry for the lover of Colin, Richie. He was a big, dumb, obedient schmuck who just did as he was told and thought everything would be "okay." Another one of the many characters I enjoyed in this book! I highly recommend this taut thriller for anyone who loves the written word - it is so tightly written, it flows so naturally, the dialog is so on target - it's just a spectacular piece of fiction.

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Iyer and I was riveted. The suspense was, OMG high-octane at times and the author spared no expense with the violent scenes. This book had it all, mob boss, a pimp who genuinely took care of his girls, good H&H characters, good cop vs. bad cop and some awesome twists. The story was well-written and edited and had an original storyline. However, what was disappointing to me was (*spoiler*) the secondary story, the romance between the H&H. It never blossomed. However, in all honesty, the way this story flowed, it kept some integrity by not giving them the HEA, which I have to admit was different and original. (*Spoiler*) Tawny, a self-employed, high-class call girl who amassed a great deal of wealth, has retired, but is pulled back into the scene, working undercover for Linc, a cop, to investigate the death of a prostitute. In exchange she makes a deal for a lenient sentence on tax evasion charges. Linc falls for Tawny and, honestly, I really don't know why, but he does. She has never had a serious relationship and she falls for Linc, even though he apparently can't forget what she used to do for a living. And, again, I don't know why she was falling for him, but she does. The final dramatic scene in this book was extremely suspenseful and more twists are unraveled. Well done. The epilogue, however, which advances six months later, was a disappointment. Again, good nods for integrity, but no satisfying relationship closure. Almost as if, to be continued...

I’m surprised this novel doesn’t have a higher overall ranking. It was a terrific read. Lincoln Walsh, NYPD, is a sex crimes investigator who is very good at what he does, but he’s been given a job that goes against his better judgment. He must persuade Tawny to work undercover at a high class establishment that's under police surveillance. Dangerous, seeing it's suspected that a call girl may have been murdered there. However, if she doesn’t comply, Tawny will face tax evasion charges which could land her in prison. Needless to say, Lincoln falls under her spell (which man doesn’t?) But she can’t resist him either, so here we have a conflict of interests adding to an already complicated situation. The road to happily ever after is bumpy enough without being fraught with dangers of every kind – plus deceit, betrayal – you name it. It’s the kind of suspense that keeps you turning the pages – right to the end when Ms. Iyer delivers some truly unexpected turns. You'll never believe whodunnit in this one.

Not over the top, not too sickly sweet, very believable. Both characters are portrayed as people who you want to cheer for. Tawny is beautiful but vulnerable and Linc is not the typical alpha male but a rugged individual who also shows a fragile side. Even the Mob boss and his henchmen are not portrayed with the usual stereotypes. All are believable characters and important to the story. All of these elements make for a terrific novel that will...well, have you hooked!

I'm a fan of Polly Iyer's books, so I was delighted when this came out. Hooked is a fast-paced, sexy read with a little humor here and there. Tawny is a smart, likeable character who chose her profession with her eyes wide open. She's someone I'd enjoy knowing. I am hooked with this good blend of cops, sex and crime story. NYPD special investigator Lincoln Walsh needs the help of first-class call-girl Tawny Dell on a sex-crime. Although Tawny has long ago left the business, she is forced to cooperate or face imprisonment for tax evasion. Tawny goes undercover to find out whether Benny Cooper had anything to do with the death of one of the girls working in his "secret" sex club. It appears that Benny is an unwilling accomplice, and Tawny was dumbfounded to learn the identity of the culprit. What's more unnerving is the involvement of cold-hearted mobster boss Mario Russo. Tawny does solve the crime, but now she is set to be the next helpless victim of a more cunning and fearsome criminal. I am hooked with the well-defined characters. Lincoln Walsh resents having to coerce Tawny to go back to a hookers life when his job demands to get them out of it. He felt even more outraged when Tawny's life is put on the line. Moreso because he has fallen for Tawny and he cannot forgive himself if something happens to her. Yet, will Linc ever come to terms with Tawny's past? I am hooked with Tawny who, although under duress, did everything to blow the lid off the case, and even when her safety is clearly being compromised. I am hooked with Benny Cooper, his wife Eileen, Russo, Linc's dad, and every other character is just amazing. Their individual characters and quirks are described distinctively, and they are given enough background that they feel so full and real. I think it's half the reason why the story is so good. It is hard to feel complete hatred for the bad guys here because the author showed that there's something good in them too. Vice versa, the good guys have dark faults too and misguided notions of justice. Overall, Hooked is a satisfying read.

Iyer’s novel, which I downloaded as a free Kindle mystery, is a bit mystery, a bit erotica, and a bit romance. While I don’t believe it’s a particularly well-constructed novel in all respects, it is a thoroughly entertaining story. I recommend it.

More of a 2.5 stars than 2. There are a lot of strong points for the story. I grant that Benny's perspective had its amusement factors, but it was unnecessary, and the suspense would have been far better if we'd only been given Tawny and/or Linc's point of view. Add to the overwriting that the end was a disappointment (esp. the last chapter, which was like the closing of a really bad romance novel--and I like good romance novels, which this was not), and it was something of a let down.

I hate when I can't finish a book... Gorgeous high class hooker who started prostituting to pay her way through college. A gorgeous FBI/CIA/Detective (?) who can't resist her. The obsessive use of "boner" who says that? I still may have given that a chance even though it was so trite you could write it yourself but... When she portrayed the pimp/bordello (?) owner sympathetically, he's just a guy that likes sex - you lost me. Also, the 400 pound mob guy who just has mommy issues. I got exactly 2 I hate when I can't finish a book... Gorgeous high class hooker who started prostituting to pay her way through college. A gorgeous FBI/CIA/Detective (?) who can't resist her. I got exactly 22% into the book before I guessed the killer, got disgusted at her portrayals of the hookers and pimps sympathetically, and rolled my eyes at some of the verbiage (boner - seriously, who says that) that I gave up. I cannot recommend this book. Sorry I spent money on it. Take a pass.

Great characters and a great plot - great read!

Tawny Dell is a retired high class call girl who winds up getting back into the life when she's 'asked' by law enforcement to gather information from an exclusive brothel and its owner. In return, she gets to stay off the IRS' radar. Linc Walsh, the sexy cop on the case, falls for Tawny hard, pretty much like every other man with whom she comes into contact :-) There's romance, suspense, humor, lots of bad guys and murder. What more could you ask for? Retired high-priced call girl Tawny Dell is given a choice – un-retire to infiltrate a very elite ‘club’ where two girls have gone missing or face income tax evasion charges – by Detective Linc Walsh. She agrees to go undercover in the club, putting herself in danger and Linc in a rush to save her. Primarily a romance, Hooked has a touch of a comedic caper novel in the way things go wrong for some of the characters and a thriller in the danger the mian characters encounter. She is a retired call girl with a PhD. He is a NYC sex-crimes / homicide detective who gets her to agree to go back into the business to help him solve the murders of a pair of women who work out of a high priced house in upper Manhattan. There are ex-prostitutes, horny procurers, gangsters, and murderers. There is lots of action and the novel is mostly entertaining, however I frequently found myself thinking it would have been better reading had the author not tried so hard to make it 'hard boi She is a retired call girl with a PhD. Many of us are forced into situations by circumstance. Tawny Dell decides she is going to retire from the racy world of high class call girl but the government has other plans for her. The reluctant acceptance of her lot in order to enjoy her retirement later is beautifully portrayed in this excellent story. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting and intriguing read.

What a page-turning read! Tawny and Linc are expertly matched as call girl and sex cop, and they join forces, reluctantly on Tawny's part, to bring down a big fish. Tawny wants to get back to her retirement;Linc wants to close the case. Electricity between these characters snaps off the page. I'm an Iyer fan and look forward to more of her books. Not a bad read - a high price call girl decides to retire from the business but the police come after her for not paying taxes. They agree to drop the charges if she helps them solve some murders and get info on a guy they've been trying to indict. The cop who presents the deal to her becomes emotionally involved with her. Couple of tense moments in the book but fairly predictable. Not a bad read - a high price call girl decides to retire from the business but the police come after her for not paying taxes.
