Momentarily forsaking his role as a World War I flying ace, Snoopy turns his imaginative energies to the subtle muses of literature and, with typewriter sitting squarely atop his dog house, embarks on a career as a world-famous novelist. Acknowledging both the frustrations and satisfactions of the literary experience, Snoopy completes his magnum opus It Was a Dark and Stor Momentarily forsaking his role as a World War I flying ace, Snoopy turns his imaginative energies to the subtle muses of literature and, with typewriter sitting squarely atop his dog house, embarks on a career as a world-famous novelist. Will he fulfill his ambitious quest for recognition in the field of arts and letters? Or will the prizes of literary excellence be as elusive as the cursed Red Baron? Whatever the answer, suffice it to say that the complete and unexpurgated version of Snoopy's novel is included in this volume, together with our hero's incisive first-person look into the anguish and delight of the writer's experience. It's a shame this is out of print. It's probably Charles Schulz's greatest single achievement in the entire Peanuts oeuvre. (That's right, I said "Peanuts oeuvre.") Every writer and aspiring writer should read this book. Not to be confused with "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night, Snoopy," which I believe is simply one of innumerable Peanuts comic-strip anthologies. No one can pack a story in so few words as well as Charles Schulz did. This wonderfully illustrated book will charm you with its simplicity. You gotta love Snoopy – he never gives up. A book for all ages that will last for ages to come.

I bought this book around 1978 and have enjoyed reading it periodically over the years. It describes the struggles a writer has in creating his first story and getting it published.

Snoopy's author photo inside the book is too clever. Love his autograph too, for that matter. Snoopy's author photo inside the book is too clever. Love his autograph too, for that matter.

It's a cartoon book. It's Snoopy. I laughed out loud at least once. This is a nice stylistic pairing to original Snoopy and the Red Baron. It's a cartoon book. It's Snoopy. I laughed out loud at least once. This is a nice stylistic pairing to original Snoopy and the Red Baron.

Snoopy has taken up a new career as a writer and so he is writing his first novel. But, some things like writer's block and even the rain get in the way of his writing - will Snoopy be able to get his novel finished and published? It was a quick and very fun read. It brought back memories of watching the Peanuts show on TV when I was a kid. I think any children or even adults who loved Snoopy and the Peanuts will enjoy this book. This is a must read for anyone who has an imagination and aspires to the writing life. I read this book as a 10 year old and never forgot it. Be sure to get this edition. The newer version, "It was a Dark and Stormy Night, Snoopy," is an entirely different book. This is a must read for anyone who has an imagination and aspires to the writing life. I just got a used copy of this book for a late Christmas present. Its short, but great for a laugh- especially if you are a writer.
