This is a cute book of ideas for building family traditions, and is organized by holiday and event, which is handy. I suppose it would be nice to have a copy hanging around my home for reference, but to be honest, I think a carefully worded Google search could be as helpful. Still, it's a cute little thing, worth looking at. Since the buzz word is transparency these days, though, I think I should come clean and admit I thought some of the suggestions in this book could be a little...um...not wel This is a cute book of ideas for building family traditions, and is organized by holiday and event, which is handy. Still, it's a cute little thing, worth looking at. Since the buzz word is transparency these days, though, I think I should come clean and admit I thought some of the suggestions in this book could be a little...um...not well suited to my family's taste. Take, for instance, the suggestion that, after family prayer all the family members link up like a train and "choo choo" through the house to deposit each person at their bedroom door. I'm sure it's a great suggestion for some, but it just seemed to reside somewhere between sweet and creepy to me. My husband laughed out loud when I read it to him. So, ya know, some of these aren't for everyone, but there are some gems. Traditions are important, so it could be a nice reference.

This book goes holiday by holiday and lists several activities that can be made into family traditions. It also lists ideas for making everyday routines like bedtime and mealtimes into meaningful, positive experiences and contains sections on how good family traditions can strengthen families. I really like the layout and aesthetics of the book. Some of the ideas sounded like they would be worth pursuing, but I also found myself reading some of them and wondering, "Do people really do that?" But that is probably due in large part to my upbringing. The book also doesn't have any suggestions for Father's Day, which was a little disappointing.

If you want to have a fun book to look through, this definitely fulfills that. There aren't any pictures or illustrations of ideas, but it is organized in a simple way and describes various traditions the authors grew up with in order of the year. I think what I most enjoyed about it, is that you are given ideas to celebrate things you may not have thought to otherwise. Obviously no one can do EVERY idea for EVERY occasion, but you can at least pick what fits your family. Has some good ideas, though some of them are super bizarre and sound like practical jokes. (Like, is there a family that actually dresses up in colonial attire to deliver a cherry pie to a neighbor on President's Day?)
