Unfortunately, this book isn't anything to get upset about spoilers. nothing to exciting here, I'll give a brief summary of the book to save you time. A young boy is growing up in the projects of New York City, but it is a cover up. His dad is a part of the Italian Mafia, one of the most dangerous and well known gangs of all time. That is their families biggest secret, and they must live like poor people so no one gets suspicious of the boys father. He lives in a family of him, his younger brother, and his mom and dad. Since his dad is part of the Mob, he is rarely home, this is discouraging to the family but they know that it must be this way. As the boy gets older, his father decides to let him in on some secrets. He takes his son out on some of his operations with the gang, and teaches his son what it's all about. Even the mob bosses see potential in this boy, but God told the boy one day, that He had different plans for him. Later on in his life, the boy (his name is Carl) decides that he is an atheist after his parents get into such a big fight that his dad leaves the family. Carl delves into spiritualism since he feels he has nowhere else to turn to. some of Carl's teachers even invite him into a secret satanic meeting, since they were into the same things as Carl was. One night, a red demon appeared in front of Carl while he was in bed, he tried to run away, but he could not move. The demonic face told Carl that he would devote his life to him, (the devil)but Carl refused and started to pray to God, for he couldn't think of anything else to do. Immediately, the face was gone, and Carl could move again. This started a lifelong journey for Carl, one with God leading. through out the rest of his high school experience, he grew closer to God and farther away from the ways of his friends and father. (who he hadn't seen in 4 years) He graduated with very good grades and went to a college for aviation, to fulfill his dream! but God still had other plans for him. He eventually dropped out of the aviation college and went into more of an engineering position. All through this, he was a seventh-day Adventist, and people made fun of him for it, because of that, this made it very hard for Carl to go through college. all through his life he had felt a calling from God to help kids and minister, he just didn't know it until later on. People had always come up to him and told him these things, and eventually he actually listened and volunteered at a SDA activity to help out kids. He loved it, he knew that he wanted to do something in the ministry. God had told him to go to a certain college to do theology, so he followed his word and went on to become a pastor. still people thought that he should focus more with children, so he then became a youth pastor, God had lead him into his proper calling, and he was very thankful. But still his life felt incomplete. His father was still in the Mafia as far as he knew, (he hadn't heard from him in a long time) and he had always wanted to try to share with him about God. the word came one day that his father had died. He immediately went up to visit his family. At the funeral service, he found out that his dad had been hospitalized at the same hospital where his aunt had worked, she shared to Carls father the Word of God, and miraculously, his father had accepted it in his heard. Carl then knew that he would see his father again one day. In Heaven. Ok, now that sounds all good right? sure I might have left out some minor details, but i stuck to the main plot for you. From reading this, In The Shadow Of The Mob might sound like a great uplifting book to read, but honestly... Eh. I think it had potential, but the writing really lacked that extra emotion that drives people forward into LOVING a book. The writing was OK, that's why i only gave this book a 2 out of 5 stars. I don't like the rating system here, I only picked a 2 because the option said "it was OK". And that's exactly what it was. If it was just a star rating system, i would have given it a 3 out of 5 stars, but i dropped it to 2 because I did not "like" the book, simply, "it was OK". If you are really into spiritually uplifting books, I could possibly suggest that you read this book, but there are far better books out there. So honestly, I would NOT recommend this book to anyone. Like I said up above, this book is OK, but it is held back from being better by poor writing that doesn't draw emotion. Read this book if you think you would enjoy it, but no, I would not recommend it.
