A collection of horrific, weird, and fantastic tales by a master storyteller and creator of best-selling military science fiction. Here are weird stories set in the present, along with alternative histories filled with gritty realism and exacting detail as well as an assortment of horrors and monsters. Most of all, here are the tough heroes who throughout time master their own fears and face the very real terrors that haunt existence.  Sometimes these heroes win a partial victory.  Sometimes it’s enough to go down fighting. Before Drake was a best-selling author of military science fiction, he was a prolific writer of horror and fantasy short fiction. “Denkirch,” Drake’s first sale, is here, and well as many stories set in the worlds of his fantasy novels (Ranks of Bronze, Lord of the Isles, and others). More than just a collection of stories, Night & Demons features extensive story notes that chronicle the development of one of science fiction's most popular writers, and provide detailed snapshots of the larger-than-life editors, publishers, and writers with whom Drake has worked throughout his career. About David Drake: “[T]he way Drake takes a tried formula and turns it on its ear is what makes him one of the modern masters of SF.” –Otherwhere Gazette  “[P]rose as cold and hard s the metal alloy of a tank … rivals Crane and Remarque …” – Chicago Sun-Times “Drake couldn’t write a bad action scene at gunpoint.” – Booklist About David Drake’s RCN series: “[R]ousing old-fashioned space opera.” -- Publishers Weekly on the “RCN” series. “The fun is in the telling, and Mr. Drake has a strong voice.  I want more!”  –Philadelphia Weekly Press “[S]pace opera is alive and well.  This series is getting better as the author goes along…character development combined with first-rate action and memorable world designs.”  –SFReader.com

SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE is my favorite short vampire story. The RED LEER builds suspense & adds detail as you read to reach an edge of your seat ending. The stories set in Vietnam add supernatural horror to the reality of war. Better sociologists than me could probably have fun with the analytical side of horror stories set amidst that particular war. Add in Drake's short comments about the stories and, sometimes, his life at the time of writing them and you have a thoroughly entertaining volume. I have loaned my hard copy of this collection to several people. All liked it. One or two even bought their own copies.

David Drake is a prolific author. Here's a collection of his short fiction from across his career. A lot of of the fiction is well-written and entertaining, but some of it is earlier work that is, by his own admission, not the best. None of the fiction found within this book is bad. It's all a lot of fun, and you may even be able to learn a lot about writing as you read. If you like fantasy and horror of all sorts you'll love this book. If you're at all interested in a writer's journey then pick David Drake is a prolific author. Here's a collection of his short fiction from across his career. This collection is delightfully eclectic, spanning a long career and covering all the obvious genres. It has some wonderful stories, the military-influenced being the best. This is strongly recommended if only for the nicely informative introductions to each story. http://opionator.wordpress.com/2013/0... No worries about this being one of those "Satan and devils" books. Just a collection of cross-genre fantasy, science fiction, and ghost story stuff that makes for an interesting distraction when there's not something more important to do.
