The Horror of the Shade was inspired by the first of the two paranormal events that I've been connected with. Quite simply it was a two second ghost sighting, witnessed by me and two of my brothers, when I was just a lad of seven. So how is that extrapolated out to a trilogy? Step one: remove me and my two brothers. Step two: change the ghost to a demon, add a hot, but diabolical witch. Throw in a hunky seventeen-year old and his hell-powered schizophrenic sister and you're in business. Oh, I forgot to mention there will also be: Gypsies, exorcisms, blood, bullets, a nice sprinkling of sex, sin, murder, and a couple of trips into the wonderful vacation spot known as Hell...and did I mention sex? Right check that off the list. Step three: Churn these all up into non-stop action, until you realize what you have is a family in dire peril. What is this story about? What every story is about: people. People in love, people in danger, people fighting for their very souls.

5 Stars What a great horror read. Meredith grabs a hold of you right from the start, with a taut, scary, and well done opening that sets the stage, the tone, and the plot.  Peter Meredith has created a wonderful Poltergeist like scare fest that works by creating a cast of real, likable, albeit a bit stereotypical bunch to like and empathize with. You have your large, strong military father figure in William, who is both the foundation and the strength on which this story is built. He has his own issues and fears, but we the reader get to see him as he works through them.  You have his soon to be a man of a teenage son in Willy J. that appears to be a young edition of his bravado father. You have the super smart sister in Talitha, whom, of course, does not realize how beautiful she really is.  There are many other great side characters, a priest, a gypsy, a nerd, and a caring mom too. Meredith's writing has some great unique aspects to it. One, he loves filling in the blanks with interesting dialogue: "Holy Crap! Look at this place! Gayle exclaimed, using only a widening of her eyes, followed by quick glance about.  'I know. Be cool about it.' he responded by way of the tiniest nod combined with a slight down turn of his lips....'It's ok, dear. You are a good husband and father, and I love you,' she made this known by rubbing his back in a circular motion twice, followed by a quick couple of pats." He also paints a great picture in his action scenes, that play off this style and provides us a lot of details. He adds flair and intrigue to ramp up the tension. One small snippet that I enjoyed: "Yes, only a boy, after years of accepting impossibly stupid dares, of leaping for trees, fences, building, and even the tops of moving cars could have done it. Will was that kind of boy, at the beach or the pool during the endless summer days that seemed like heaven, no dive was ridiculous enough in its danger to slow him down, if there was a sun kissed girl nearby to impress," As for the horror. After a big bang beginning, the suspense and tension slowly builds and the level of creepiness increases. I really was at the edge of my seat as I found myself quickly trying to find out what happened next.  As the plot thickens, and the story unfolds Meredith, to  my pleasure throws in a good deal of God fearing religion and Christian beliefs. "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God" This is not a gory read, nor is it very graphic, but it still succeeds at being intense and at times scary. You will find connections with the characters which will lead you to feeling a bit of their fears.  The characterizations are good, the story is tight, and the horror is so much fun. A great start and finish to book number one in a series that I am now highly recommending and looking forward to. And a super great deal for Kindle readers on Amazon...I got it for $.99.

I enjoyed The Horror of the Shade very much and read it straight through in two days. I got my money's worth you might say. The story was nothing like I expected. I figured haunted house, scary scary, scary, blood, gore... big finish. Instead, I got to know and enjoy a family in a terrible situation. They were well written and so believable, I actually cried( I'm not a big crier and I want you to know I didn't bawl, I just got teary eyed) I can't remember the chapter number, but it was when the I enjoyed The Horror of the Shade very much and read it straight through in two days. So the Jern's are in a new house that is just a touch freaky, but then bam, things fly apart on them when a demon enters the picture. I enjoyed the demon and how it effected each family member in its own way. They scaddle out of there, but one of the kids is possessed in a very strange and unique manner. The story then revolves and around how they figure out how to save her. Finally they find someone who has had previous experience, someone that we first had met in the prologue, Adrina. The first chapter, by the way is great. I was so hooked by what happens to Adrina and her son, who she ends up killing, but you don't find out why till much later. I digress. Adrina helps them figure out a way to confront the demon and after some very interesting dialogue on the purpose and meaning of hell, they go after the demon. The final fight is understandable, but chaotic, and just like the beginning, gripping. On a final note, I wanted there to be more to the book. By that I mean I wanted to know what happen next! I wanted more chapters. Which in my opinion is good. This was an interesting book and one that is hard to pigeon hole. It was horror, but very in depth horror. If you are looking for lots of blood and little story, this is not for you.

Had a great creepy feeling throughout the whole book. I really enjoyed that it didnt read like a typical possession story w/ dead languages and such. The cast of characters was well written. I cant wait to see what lies in store in book Two.

I think 3.5 stars on this one. Honestly, I didn't dislike it. I liked that it was creepy, not over the top on trying to be scary, but a more subtle scary for most of it. The beginning was fantastic, I loved how it started, that's what really got me reading it. I think the thing that brought this one down for me was Willy J. He started driving me crazy at that party after he was so depressed. I couldn't believe some of the things he did. I mean, I get that he's young, but he's old enough to know I think 3.5 stars on this one. Honestly, I didn't dislike it. I think that they made the story flow nicely. I think this is a good summer read if you want something just a bit creepy. I think I will read it again :)

I received this for review from the author.I'm not big into horror. Truth be told I avoid it all costs. However I took a risk reading this book. From the moment you start reading you are freaked out of your mind. You continue on hoping there will be end to the horror.Peter did an awesome job with the scare factor!! I'm glad to have been given the chance to review this. Even though it took a while, I had to take breaks from reading. Yes I got scared!! I liked this book it was well written and kept me interested in seeing how it turned out. I stand corrected although the ending seemed a little rushed it was brought to my attention (by the author himself- thanks Peter) that I in fact had not downloaded the complete trilogy. I particularly enjoyed the fact that cursing and sex was not over used in this book which happens in quite a few horror novels to overshadow the main story.I Really look forward to finding out what is in store for the Jern f I liked this book it was well written and kept me interested in seeing how it turned out. Great book, loved it! Addictive story about a demon battling a lovable family, with fun storyline and interesting background thrown in to better the reader's understanding about the power and darkness of this particular demon, as well as knowledge of where it came from (not surprisingly, from their next door neighbor)...can't wait to start book two now! It was a slow start, but eventually it started getting really good. I can definitely tell this is his first book. Can't wait to read the other two books in the series. Good I'm not into demonic possession / religious exorcism, so I was kind of reluctant to read that trilogy. Gave it a try because I really dig Peter Meredith and it was worth it. He always succeed to put something different in each of his intrigues. The second one was better, too. I just finished the trilogy this afternoon and I thought it was fantastic! The first quarter of book one is a slow build to let you get to know the characters and after that its off and running. The author has an original concept of hell and the way it works. I loved it. I do recommend it. Highly. I don't do spoilers, I just give my opinion. Always remember that a review is just one persons' opinion. Pick up the book and make up your own mind. Don't base it on a strangers' viewpoint. At first I was very sceptical, because I am not that much into demons. It also appeared to be out of place how the story started, yet I just could not stop reading after just a couple of pages. The story begins with the very first try to get rid of this specific demon - the characters are not well introduced, so it's kind of like solving a riddle. As the demon hits again and the second try to rid the house of it is worked on, the story is getting more and more thrilling with each page. Besides very graphically described horror scenes that will make your skin crawl, the author loaded this book with lots of emotions that can easily be shared by the reader. I just really enjoyed reading the first part of this trilogy and am looking forward to part 2 & 3.

My new favorite author... Halfway thru this book I had to stop and immediately order the next two in the series. I've read some of Mr. Meredith's books before but this one is totally over the top! If you are a fan of horror, this is definitely for you.
