I thought I'd start the New Year off with some good old Harlequin Presents. It's high drama with an evil OW, a hot but dumb as brick husband, and a naive and insecure heroine. I enjoyed it for what it is: a quick, angsty, and train-wrecky read. That said, I wish there was more grovel, which seems to be like this elusive unicorn in HP land. The hero did something really, really dumb and it took only one conversation and declaration of love and the heroine was again putty in his hands. Heroine was an idiot who believed everyone but her poor husband. She was so mean and bitchy I wanted to slap her silly! I think I'll stay away from this author. Dimitri apparently fell for Maddie from their first meeting. However, Dimitri is trying to settle a lot of things in order to spend more time w/ Maddie and he seems to have a problem w/ saying the ILY - well except to the OW. He never seemed to know about the serpents in his little eden either. When Maddie has finally had enough of Dimitri catering to the OW and her naïvety in believing the OW - which makes no sense when you think about it - she does a runner. Dimitri manages to track her down before she arrives at her destination, get some important info, and then use it to blackmail her in to returning w/ him. Dimitri claims that he is honorable yet he blackmailed his estranged wife, he puts this OW and her problems before his wife, and he reveals very hurtful info to Maddie just to get what he wants! The icing on this cake is that Dimitri latches on to the idea that Maddie is just a gold digger and yet claims in his thoughts that he was reluctant to grab that thought. IMHO it didn't seem like he was too reluctant. Dimitri seemed to want to bury his head in the sand as to Maddie's reasons for leaving - possibly because he is thinking gold digger - and refused to hear her true reasons for leaving. Dimitri just runs to and fro at this OW's beck and call while claiming he doesn't go for ultimatums. Also if Dimitri claims that Maddie is so transparent then why didn't he see the pain she was in towards the critical scene. He wanted to really work at this r/s and he offered some great promises to Maddie. New life will be good and she will want for nothing (he thought she was a gold digger anyway and he gives in on this too), whatever she desires she will have (unless OW calls first), and he seems to want to cosset her and take care of her but how quickly this is forgotten in favor of OW. OW phones and Dimitri is there when Maddie acts odd and he thinks NOTHING of her behavior. He is more in tune w/ OW and her needs. The OW has pulled this same stunt before. Maddie wants him to stay, she needs him. He won't disappoint OW he made a promise and he doesn't break them - except to his wife! Dimitri doesn't call for two days (what was he doing that he couldn't contact his wife whom he claims to love) and he is only there now because of his aunt deeming it necessary to call him. Problem being that Maddie had a scare during pregnancy once before and before he ran off to the OW Maddie had collapsed against the wall and was breathing oddly, but he seemed more concerned w/ the OW who cried wolf again!! Did I mention that he didn't bother to call home once when he left to help OW and where was he? Dimitri even used the excuse of never getting the hang of saying ILY yet he claimed it to the OW. I think this story left me w/ some unanswered questions in regards to time frame and this whole OW stuff. It also appeared that this honorable guy was not adverse to breaking promises. It just depended upon whose promise he was breaking, and when and whom he was protecting in the breaking of them.

As far as HP's go, this one didn't work for me. It was filled with all the familiar HP tropes, but they were poorly executed. She really needed therapy and he needed to care about his wife beyond just their bedroom. As far as HP's go, this one didn't work for me. Maddy was OTT gullible, but I did enjoy the evil actions by Irini and the despicable aunt. This was an entertaining way to kill a couple of hours of my road trip.

I had forgotten I read. Not a good sign. Maddie, our gardening, voluptuous, freckled tiny h is SO stupid I doubt she could tie her own shoes. Her reluctance to cause tension between Dimitri and his uber evil aunt and the even more uber evil OW, Irini, borders on criminally stupid. I mean, there is not causing waves, and then there's having a modicum of common sense. The failure-to-communicate ties with the all-women-are-gold-digging-plotters-especially-when-they-seem-innocent as worst trope ever. I had forgotten I read. Not a good sign. The story gets bumped to a marginal two star as there is some other nice angsty stuff and although the hero is an ass-hat, he really loves the heroine. On more than one occasion, he asks her what is wrong which makes her silence EVEN MORE STUPID! Yes, a Greek alpha Harlequin H that wants to talk. Stop the presses! The connection between the H and the tiny, stupid h had a Lynne Graham quality about it if that makes sense.

The story picks up three months later with Dimitri being left a note by Maddie saying that their marriage was over. Dimitri tracks her down and forces her back to their marriage with blackmail as her family is in financial trouble. We discover that Maddie had discovered that Dimitri doesn't love her, instead he is still in love with a close friend. The close friend told Maddie that as she is unable to have children Dimitri married Maddie in order to get her pregnant then divorce her, taking the child away from her, and will be able to marry her. Maddie's confidence is also at rock bottom after awful treatment from Dimitri's aunt, who disapproves of Maddie. When they find out she is expecting a baby, Dimitri tries to make amends and Maddie tries to believe that she can make Dimitri fall in love with her and vows that no one will take her baby from her. First things first, this was a good read and it was the classic tale of each character misunderstanding each other, which could have been cleared up if only they talked to one another, but of course that doesn't happen 'cause they are stubborn! I wasn't too keen on the characters. At first I thought that Maddie was quite strong as she actually got up the nerve to leave Dimitri, but after that tiny spurt of tenacity she seemed to wilt. I do understand that she had confidence issues after being beaten down by his aunts criticism but she seemed to accept all this awful treatment like she was little more than a doormat. In the beginning of the book she had a career that she was excited about and loved, yet after she married it was never mentioned again. She forgave all this awful treatment (from the Aunt and close friend) in the click of finger, which seemed completely spineless. Dimitri was also rather frustrating, he wondered why Maddie was withdrawn around his Aunt when she made no attempt to hide her barbs, he also spoke to Maddie, at times, like a pile of trash. Although his confusion over why Maddie had asked for a divorce was written very well, he thought she was a gold-digger but deep down he knew this wasn't the case! Like I said, I did enjoy the book, and the misunderstandings, although frustrating, kept me reading. I just wish that the heroine had been more strong as a woman. He followed her home to England and informed her that in three weeks she was returning home with him to Greece as his wife! With an attraction that was explosive, Maddie couldn’t fight her feelings and quickly gave in to his decree. And now three months later, Dimitri is totally stunned to come home and find a note from his wife that she’s left him and wants a divorce. What Dimitri doesn’t know is that his live-in Aunt has been subtly undermining Maddie’s confidence, claiming she was so far beneath the Kouvaris family. And that Irini the woman his Aunt had wanted Dimitri to marry, has been telling evil stories on how Dimitri had only married her for her ability to give children, as Irini can’t conceive; and once a child is born, Dimitri won’t hesitate to divorce her, taking the child from her and then marrying the woman he really loves, Irini. Dimitri thinks she’s a gold-digger and that now after the obligatory few months of marriage she’s looking for a juicy financial settlement. So he uses a crisis with her parents to blackmail her into returning to the marriage, this only reinforces in Maddie’s mind what Irini has told her. There are quite a few plot similarities to the story I previously reviewed. Again, we have a heroine who leaves her husband before he has the chance to boot her out. One very nice difference is that we are given Dimitri’s POV and we can see that for him it was love at first sight. He’s in total ignorance of the evil stories Irini and his Aunt have been telling Maddie. This is a classic story where both hero and heroine could easily have cleared up their problems had they only communicated. I felt for Maddie, as she put it, she was in a catch 22 situation. Dimitri was well portrayed in his real confusion over why his wife wants a divorce. There were a few moments where I was truly ready to thworp him over the head and one cringe worthy moment near the end of the book that I wished hadn’t been included. This is a fast paced emotional read and I enjoyed it very much.
