In this way the status of realism itself is questioned, as the narrative discloses those subterranean spaces which are its hidden underworld. _________________ Il testo affronta la problematica inerente al rapporto tra il realistico e il fantastico in tre narratrici inglesi dell'800, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë e George Eliot. L'analisi è volta in particolare a cogliere la varie modalità testuali con cui il discorso fantastico, più o meno segreto e ellittico, interferisce nel registro realistico che, secondo la tradizione critica, caratterizzerebbe fino in fondo la scrittura di queste autrici. Viene così messo in discussione lo statuto del realismo man mano che la narrazione rivela i sottofondi immaginari che ne costituiscono la cifra occulta.
