This one was hard for me. There is a genre called hagiography (or something very close to this!), which means spiritual autobiography. For Tibetan Buddhism, this usually means a list of all the teachings a person has received, the guru or Rinpoche who taught them, and that persons root guru or Rinpoche. So, half of the stories where just lists of teachings that I didn't know the meaning of and had never heard, and teachers I had never heard of and whose names I couldn't pronounce. So, half of the stories where just lists of teachings that I didn't know the meaning of and had never heard, and teachers I had never heard of and whose names I couldn't pronounce. I did learn quite a bit from the author, who's story and introduction take up about 50% of the book. (for instance, I now know what hagiography is). She's an interesting woman with an interesting story. If you're looking to learn more about culture and philosophy and history of the Dakini's, her 100 page introduction is thorough and easy to understand.

This is a lovely collection of short biographies of Tibetan Buddhist women, starting with early stories that have a mythological feel.

An interesting read. If one wants to read about the female yoginis of the Buddhist Tradition, this is a good book to start with.

Read this book to prepare for an upcoming retreat and workshop at Omega Institute. Very interesting look at the spiritual growth of women exploring Tibetan female mystics. Can't wait to learn more!

After reading the Dali Lama's autobiography I wanted to learn more about the lives of monks or nuns and Tibetan tradition. Due to the patriarchal times of the past there is very little written about women. Tsultrim Allione noticed this which brought about this book. She has researched Tibetan female mystics and written thier stories in this wonderful collection. I feel completely inspired by this book.

I read Tsultrim years ago when I was invited to a presentation with her in Austria. Later, after Tibetan monks came to my homeland... I went to Pagosa Springs and I have not as yet been to Tara Mandala...her temple and retreat in Colorado. I would very much like to go. That area of Colorado...in the midst of the Mesas and Anasazi is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Tsultrim has a very good understanding of the sacred feminine within Buddhism.

The collection of biographies of yoginis of old Tibet is very nice, I found the part describing authorĀ“s own experience a little redundant and immature at places, but overall a good read.

The biography of Ayu Khandro was especially fascinating. A simply rendered story of epic proportions--but epic only in the simplicity of practice, and dedication to realizing one's true nature.
