Loved, feared, hated and worshipped by people throughout history, the HEKATE - Keys to the Crossroads A collection of personal essays, invocations, rituals, recipes and artwork from modern Witches, Priestesses and Priests who work with Hekate, the Ancient Greek Goddess of Witchcraft, Magick and Sorcery. Hekate is one of the most fascinating Goddesses of the Ancient World. Loved, feared, hated and worshipped by people throughout history, the Witch Goddess of the Crossroads, facing three-ways, with her three faces, remains an image of power and awe in the modern world today, amongst those who understand and respect her power. This book "Hekate: Keys to the Crossroads" brings together the experiences and perceptions of more than twenty modern day Witches, Priestesses and Priests all of whom work with this awesome Greek Goddess in the UK today. Through their essays, rituals and artwork they present a unique view into the realms of this multi-faceted and popular Goddess. Part I - Hekate's History, Myths & Powers Here author and Priestess, Sorita D'Este, presents a detailed and comprehensive study of the history, myths and powers of Hekate. This invaluable section offers the reader insights to some of the roles, relationships and powers Hekate held in the Ancient World. Part II - Hekate's Witches This section contains essays by sixteen Witches, Priestesses and Priests who work with Hekate on a regular basis. Each contribution is as unique as the person who wrote it, clearly illustrating through both their differences and similarities that the many faces presented by Hekate in the ancient world continue on today in the twenty-first century. Hekate is a Goddess of transformation, initiation, childbirth, death and rebirth. She is the Mistress of Magick, Witchcraft and Sorcery. She is the key-bearing Goddess of Night who illuminates the paths through the mysteries with her bright torches, guarding the entranceways and guiding travellers through the realms of Heaven, Earth and Sea. Powerful and respected by Gods and mortals alike, she has the power to bestow gifts and blessings upon those who call upon her with honour and truth. Part III - Recipes, Rites & Rituals A collection of modern invocations, pathworkings, incense and food recipes, together with a group mystery play of the Abduction of Persephone by Hades in which Hekate plays a key role. Combining the best of research with a wide range of experiences this compact volume opens doorways in to many of Hekate's realms. It is a unique journey - enchanting, funny, scary, magickal and daring, challenging and informative. Whether you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with the perceptions you will find within, one thing is certain: there is always more to learn and experience when it comes to Hekate

To be honest, I almost passed this book by because of its home-spun appearance. I was afraid that it was just another pseudo-spiritual, misinformed New Age compiliation by people who don't really know the subject. I went ahead and bought it anyway, and I am so glad that I did! Do not let the apparent simplicty of this book fool you. Although written in everyday language, the content is among the best I've seen on the subject of Hekate. It is well-researched, and avoids (and actually debunks, much to my delight) many of the most common misconceptions of this amazing deity that even many pagans are guilty of perpetuating. My only peeve is with Part II, the personal essay portion of the book. I loved hearing the multiplicty of voices and perspectives, but it's obvious that the essays were published exactly as they were submitted; there are numerous typos, grammatical errors and other issues that could easily have been remedied with even a simple editing job. These errors detract from what are otherwise very engaging pieces. This charming and informative book should be essential reading for anyone interested in Hekate. As a scholar of religion with a personal connection to Hekate, I've already done much research on Her and therefore did not really learn anything "new" in Part I ("Hekate's History"), but the rest of the book definitely gave me new things to ponder. It was spiritually uplifting and thought-provoking...which is, I suppose, the point. Although academically sound, this is much more than a book for academics. It is a book for practitioners, and anyone interested in developing a relationship with Hekate would be wise to read it.

An inspirational collection of personal accounts, experiences, and worship by a large group of Hekate's devotees. The first portion of the book is a concise history of Hekate and was written by Sorita. It's a good introduction, but the second part (the essays) is personal gnosis at its best. Some of the experiences and conclusions seemed odd and off the mark, while others were uncannily similar to my own experiences. A few of the writers included some of the pathworkings they use to meditate on the Goddess, and there's also a section with invocations, prayers, more pathworkings, a ritual drama, handcrafted incense blends, and recipes for Greek foods - some historically associated with Hekate's worship and rites. I haven't whipped any of them up yet, but look forward to doing so at a later date. My copy has colored tab-flags all over in it, marking things I want to try, or think on, or felt might be useful. Don't let the book's small press, homemade feel deter you; the content is worthwhile. If you decide to pick up a copy, do so at avalonia.co.uk instead of Amazon or B&N. For those of stateside, you'll save $7-$8 because postage and packing is free, and the book's price equates to the value in GBP, instead of an MSRP of $25. Just a heads up.

A wonderful collection of a diverse range of experiences of this luminal and often elusive goddess. Split into three sections, the books opens with a brief introductory ‘lesson’ on the history and mythology of Hekate, which, while short, is thorough and well sourced, and followed by a bibliography and further reading section for those that want a bit more to get their teeth into. The middle section is dedicated to the experiences of devotees of Hekate, from many different walks of life. The middle section is dedicated to the experiences of devotees of Hekate, from many different walks of life. It’s worth remembering that these are the experiences of many different voices, as this really comes across in the differing writing styles. One thing they all share is a passion for Hekate which shines off the page. The final section is basically different ways to honour Hekate; poetry, ritual, recipes, incense and more. This is a great reference section, and I will certainly be trying out some of the incense recipes. A book to return to again and again, and one that makes you think of your own experiences and the differences and similarities between those of the contributors.

Also, someone can find how many different people work well with the Goddess. Part three contains incense recipes with a good introduction, Cake recipes offerings, food offerings, two pathworkings, invocation and ode. This book is a good way to start knowing the Triple-formed Goddess. For more information, there is Hekate, Liminal Rites and other good books too.

I really liked it. I liked the author's scholarly beginning to the book, with a bit of brief history about Hekate in ancient Greece. I enjoyed most of the personal essays...some leaned towards a new age cheesiness, but overall I felt they were sincere descriptions of individuals' and groups' efforts to work with this goddess and her unique attributes. A theme throughout many of the essays resonated with me personally; "You don't choose Hekate, she chooses you". This book gave me a better underst I really liked it. This book gave me a better understanding of the symbols of Hekate, especially as they hold meaning in my life, and how they may be worked with; i.e., keys, crossroads, double torches of illumination, etc. It left me longing for more...and with a desire to try some of the recipes at the end...like Saffron Honey Cakes...

Sorita's compilations on all all things Hekate, are a must for all Devotees and followers of the mighty Goddess. I enjoy reading the different perspectives and ways of working with Hekate.
