One of my all-time favorite series. I absolutely love the way Elizabeth Peters(also known as Barbara Michaels, real name Barbara Mertz) wrote - the way she put things into words, her character development, her sense of humor. I'm just sad that she won't be writing any more books as she passed away last year. I've read the entire Amelia Peabody series and it was delightfully exciting, adventurous, romantic and entertaining all the way through. The main character, Amelia, is an engaging, quirky, spunky, Victorian era Egyptologist who refuses to toe the line of Victorian era propriety. Her escapades make for some greatly amusing moments, and she and her family became like dear friends to me while I was reading the series. I could never set the books down and when I finished one I always rushed straight to the library to find the next. I definitely recommend these books and everything else Barbara Mertz ever wrote under her own name and both of her pen names.

I loved them all. They build on each other until you're involved in the entire family as they fight off various nefarious villains while trying to improve the quality of Egyptian archeology at the turn of the 20th century. Always fun, educational, occasionally hilarious. I loved them all. Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first in the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. After the first chapter, I remember that I read it a few years ago, but I don't remember why I didn't continue on with the series. Just plain fun historical mystery.
