My first experience with Charles Stross and I'm looking forward to reading more! I really enjoyed this story set in the very near future in Edinburgh, Scotland and focused on a mystery. I really enjoyed this story set in the very near future in Edinburgh, Scotland and focused on a mystery. Someone has stolen treasure from a bank repository in an online game. The company responsible for insuring the game's success for players calls the cops, then a second company in London sends auditors to find out what happened. This is only the tip of an iceberg that stretches deep into an ocean of hackers, gamers, and sovereign countries trying to undermine the EU. I'm not a gamer, so it took me a while to get into the story, but I was very grateful that Stross provided a non-gamer character in Sergeant Sue Smith. She's still very plugged in as everyone is in this very near future. Everything is online. But I related strongly to her and her questions. The two other point-of-view characters are Jack, a programmer/gamer, and Elaine, a forensic auditor and sometime gamer. Stross develops these characters slowly and well, giving them vulnerabilities as well as strengths. I loved that there were no real "heroes" in this story in a superhero sense. This is a very human story despite the immersion in technology. What I REALLY admired about this book, as a writer, was Stross' decision to use second person point of view. I'd not read a story told in second person before. It can be a tricky POV to sustain. But Stross insures clarity by identifying the point-of-view character for each chapter in the chapter's title. The "you" also doesn't annoy the reader as it could because Stross is careful to not use "you" that much in each paragraph. Overall, this is an impressive story and book, and one that I'm comfortable recommending highly.
