Lio, the comic, is one of those comic strips that's just rare to see published in the paper these days...it doesn't conform to the norm. Lio breaks all of the rules and loves to play with monsters, giant squids, give zombies makeovers, and routinely invents robots that an take over the world (or can serve coca and cookies on Christmas eve.) I give the book 4 stars for two things: 1) They goofed and repeated one of the Sunday strips twice (the one of Lio and the Squid sitting on Santa's lap for a picture...much to Santa's confusion. 2) Some of the Sunday strips are harder to read/see the detail because they've been reduced in size to fit on the page. Other than that a fantastic collection and well worth buying (and devouring)

Even though the Comics is still the first section of the paper I grab every Sunday, I actually only read a handful. This is one of them. Lio is simple, funny, sweet, and a bit twisted--basically everything a mainstream comic strip should be. It's probably the closest in spirit to Calvin and Hobbes that we have today. Good for a modern newspaper comic, but it's nowhere near the quality of Calvin and Hobbes or Peanuts, despite common claims to the contrary. Good for a modern newspaper comic, but it's nowhere near the quality of Calvin and Hobbes or Peanuts, despite common claims to the contrary.
