Favorite in this volume was the last story "The Inn". Quite chilling. Literally. Favorite in this volume was the last story "The Inn". Quite chilling. Literally.

This collection is a superb introduction to Guy de Maupassant, much like volume 2 of this series that I reviewed earlier. There are twelve stories and novellas here, with a full seven being masterpieces in the art of the short story. To read The Wreck, The Trip of La Horla, The Inn and a few others is to enter a world view that is poetic and true to life, and yet misogynististic (these stories were written in the 1880s, a time when women were not considered equal to men) and, at times very depressive. It is difficult to describe human behavior realistically without concluding at times that we are a the summation of a failed experiment. But, there is also joy, tender moments, and happy surprises. Maupassant is an author you can immerse yourself in and really feel what it must have been like to live in Paris 130 years ago. He is not to be missed.
