This was a great way to experience these stories. Putting it in a volume that includes historical, biographical, and critical texts to create context really helped build a better understanding of the fiction as pertains to imperialism during the Victorian period of English expansion. This book was able to pack a college course into one volume. Each author comes from a different background and has different views on colonialism and getting that context really helps to better understand each story that much better. It was also very refreshing to read the modern critiques to better see some of the issues not always noticed when reading these stories, especially from a white, western viewpoint. I have now put all of these collections on my ‘want to read’ list but wish there were more to choose from. I would highly recommend this collection if you have any interest in reading any of the stories included, any other Victorian novels of the period for historical context, or are a history buff of the period.

Here it is in fiction, a primer on "empire." If you know little of nothing about the British empire, then you need to read these three classics in tandum to grasp your first breath of it all. Also read To Shoot an Elephant by George Orwell. All are must reads. Here it is in fiction, a primer on "empire."
