I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. I finished it in a day. Shimmer is a wonderful story teller. It is advisable to read the book in order of the stories because though they are about different people, they are in chronological order. From the bliss world of childhood, where life is simple and yet quite complex because as a child you are part of the adult world where things happen and no explanations are forthcoming. Shimmer tackles the confusion of boyhood transition to adolescence, the disillusionment of manhood, the difference between what a boy sees and thinks about being a man and what really happens when you become a man, a husband and a father. This book is a wonderful read, I was that little boy who knew mother was sick but was getting fatter, I was that boy who was entrapped by his father to teach him that life is not as easy as he thought, I was that young man ready for marriage but marred by the reality that the perfect candidate is not really the one and I was that man who was driven out to drink by the disenchantment of marriage and wanting to ask my wife "Can we talk?" Once again Mr. Chinodya has shown his brilliance as a wordsmith.

This is the first work of Shimmer Chinodya that I'm reading I must say I look forward to reading more from him. I enjoy his tone of sincerity and practicality. I also enjoy his free style and the manner in which he communicates delicate societal issues so lightly using wit. I recommend this book to everyone who is a lover of short stories especially those who enjoy African writers. Out of 11 stories in this book Can we talk was my most favourite, followed by The Waterfall and Play your cards. One of the best short-stories collections I have ever read. It has to start with the use of a young boy to an older one, using short stories to display all the phases of one's life. From childhood, teenagehood and adulthood. One of the best short-stories collections I have ever read.
