All of us face the prospect of death it not this day, then one day. But most of us would rather defer that thought indefinitely. Earlier generations of Christians studied classic ars moriendi manuals on the art of dying to help them face and embrace morality. I got this book only for the chapter on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and didn’t read the rest. In sum, the chapter didn’t tell me anything that I hadn’t already known, and it also included fairly off-putting commentary about what we should all strive to be like, etc. (Kind of like a biography of Bonhoeffer with a built-in Sunday School lesson in an off-putting tone.) Side note: The Bonhoeffer chapter spends a chunk of time discussing Bonhoeffer’s supposed involvement in the plot to kill Hitler, and I th I got this book only for the chapter on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and didn’t read the rest. Side note: The Bonhoeffer chapter spends a chunk of time discussing Bonhoeffer’s supposed involvement in the plot to kill Hitler, and I thought that speculation was considered increasingly less valid. This book was published in 2011; I’m not perfectly up to date on the evolution of that specific theory, so I may be wrong or out-dated. But I was surprised that the chapter embraced that theory unquestioningly.
