Every house holds a mystery. Behind the door, beside the stove, under the stairs, along the roads — Hobgoblins have been the helpful housemates, neighbors, and friends of humans for thousands of years. But beware! There is so much to think about, to make notes about, and to research, should you so wish, in this beautiful book that I think it's a boon to creative storytellers in classrooms and for those parents who are fond of telling their own bedtime stories to young folk." "Hobgoblins is a riot of folkloric fun. The perfect way to say 'hello home and hearth' if you've been having a spot of bother at home and can't think why. Hobgoblins, Brownies, Abbey Lubbers and others have their rights too, you know. Blissfully illustrated, fat and unctiously rich with lore to hold in hand..." - Caitlin Matthews, author of The Storyworld Cards

This lovely, amazingly lavish book is a guide to hobgoblins in their many forms. Reading a book like this one, that deserves to be studied and pored over, reminds us that the physical beauty of a book cannot always be replicated in an e-version. The art is astonishing and the information is interesting. I wish the author had given some source notes, since it is hard to tell what may have been completely made up by him, and what has been pulled from literature and lore. Elementary, junior high.

Wonderful, love this book! My son got it as a Christmas present from his best-friend, but I read it first! I am a huge supernatural, spiritual, mythological and fantasy buff, my son would have only have forgotten this book on shelf for his books about cars, science and robot wars! I would like to claim the book, but his dad won't let me, lol! Wonderful, love this book! My son got it as a Christmas present from his best-friend, but I read it first! Hobgoblins are those helpful spirits that help around the house if you keep your home well: don't be lazy, always be hospitable, fill your home with kindness, consideration, and laughter, and remember the hobgoblin with offerings. Seems like a good way to live in any event! This is a delightfully illustrated book, complete with hidden messages (bits of paper folded over that you have to lift). The four green circles on the front are half-beads, set into the cover, and there's a tassel coming off Hobgoblins are those helpful spirits that help around the house if you keep your home well: don't be lazy, always be hospitable, fill your home with kindness, consideration, and laughter, and remember the hobgoblin with offerings. The four green circles on the front are half-beads, set into the cover, and there's a tassel coming off the top as well. It's a beautiful book, through and through. It's written as a guide to all things hobgoblin; the pages cover: * The Hobgoblin Hall of Hearth and Home * Hobgoblin Sighting * Early Evidence of Hobgoblins (including the Roman version, Lares) * Clothes - Magic and Meaning * Hob Spaces and Secret Places * Hearth Lore * Keepers of the Kitchen * Dwellers in the Cellars * Hidden Homes (the places they like to make into their homes inside your home) * Barn and Farm (hobs and their behavior on the farm) * Gardens, Grand and Forgotten * Gifts, Tithes, and Offerings * Hobs to Goblins (hobgoblins turn into goblins when you don't keep your home well or if you don't remember the hobgoblin) * Grendel - A Goblin of Fearsome Reputation * Guardians of Grim Places * Wandering Folk * Household Allies and Enemies * Hob Spells and Charms * Weavers of Fate * Robin Goodfellow * Good Relations It's a delightful book, and I almost hate to give it to the nephew for Christmas!

This is one of those books that I would give to kids who liked the Dragonology Companion Books (as in not Dragonology but the smaller book that has more "information" about dragons). Only this is about Hobgoblins. The art is great. It makes me think of the Spiderwick Chronicles hobgoblins. And lots of fun "facts". Like I said, kids who like those "ology" companion books will like this. Lots of folkloric information about these creatures; presented as if they are real. Has small lift-flaps throughout, and a couple of fold-out pages. Lots of cute illustrations.

while this book has some good information, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. It's ideal for children, but doesn't get very deep into hobgoblin lore. while this book has some good information, it wasn't quite what I was looking for.
