Another enormous collection of incredible Madman comics. Allred's love of the medium shines through on every page. Fun, quirky, comics that I wish I'd discovered earlier. I have been reading Madman for years, and some of my fondness for the character is probably what keeps me reading. But I had to admit to myself that although Allred is an amazing artist he isn't much of a writer. At least, that was how I felt when I read the Atomics issues in this very large collection. They are simple, by-the-numbers sci-fi stories. Every member of the the newly mutated street beatnik group is flat with no personality. Madman is the exception to this, of course. But the fact that he has personality, and the others do not, made me wish Allred would scrap the idea all together. Eventually he kind of does scrap the idea. By the time the series ends, the Atomics aren't going on adventures, they are (for no explainable reason) rock musicians. The final Madman series in the collection is where Allred proves that he can write a decent story. All those irrelevant characters are pushed to the sidelines and the writing moves up a notch or two. The new art style is amazing as well. Allred does this cell background thing where the world becomes very detailed and deep. Allred even experiments with panel layout. While it is nice to seem him experiment, it becomes very hard to read. In all, the second half of the collection is where it all comes together.

A heavyweight volume for an essentially lightweight series. While I enjoy Allred's work, this ends up being let down towards the end by the stories essentially turning into cross-promotion not only for Red Rocket 7 but also for Allred's band, The Gear, with the oddball beatnik superhero riff abandoned to turn the Atomics into a band and Frank Einstein into a vocalist (which does, admittedly, bring the David Bowie homages full circle.)
