Her blood is his lifeline. His love could be her salvation Call girl Cassandra Connely drifts through life in a haze of guilt and sedatives, burdened by a deadly mistake from her past and plagued by nightmares of horrific, clawed creatures. Her newest client is a mouth-watering distraction, and she finds herself intrigued by Viktor Novotny s eccentric tastes. Until he touches her, and her nightmares become real. One look at the woman in the hot red dress, and Viktor rests assured he will hang onto his humanity at least one more night. In the century since an attack turned him into a vampire and killed his wife, regular sexual encounters are his only defense against becoming a mindless Minion. Yet when Cassie agrees to be his companion and meal for the evening, she stirs his soul in a way he hasn t felt since his lost lover. Viktor s haunted eyes pull at her heart, but Cassie cannot bear to feel anything, ever again. When she flees his apartment, though, she is in more peril than she knows. Tasting her blood without completing their union has left Viktor hungry for no other but her. And vulnerable to the very Minions that wait to drag him into the void. Worse, Cassie is their next target Warning: Contains explicit love scenes that will make your blood boil over, including a brief m/m encounter, ill-advised (but oh-so-sexy) use of sharp objects, and hypnotic kisses that could just for a moment make you imagine you are Viktor s lady of the night."

This was okay. I liked the story and I think the framework for this was really solid. It was advertized as Vampire Erotic Romance...but quite honestly, they could have left the erotica out. We could have done with out the m/m scene and concentrated on their developing relationship. This is one of those stories that could have been so much more than it is. The thing I did not like is that the author wrote the character Cassandra as a prostitute. I just didn't connect with the heroine at all. I do have strong religious views but I would not judge someone if they chose to earn a living this way. I do not know what brought them to that point. And maybe my problem with this book is that I didn't know what brought Cassandra to that point of desperation. I kept hearing how tortured and sad she was, but a little more background in order to understand would have helped to relate to her. Putting that aside, there were some wonderful passages in this book where the author really drew me into the story. I especially liked the fights with the minions, some of the dialog about how Emily & Melina died, and the way Viktor was able to go out into the sun that one day and he cried red tears from the joy of it. I really felt it. It was disappointing because a little more work and this could have been a home run. In the end it was like the engine who said they "could" and in the end didn't.

I love the Sophie Scaife/The Boss series and I had hoped to find the same love here. I didn't though. Barnette's writing has obviously grown a lot it the past four years. I think that this story has a lot of potential. Past lives and interesting vampire lore. A vampire that needs sex in order to retain humanity-- is that not the perfect erotic romance novel set up or what? However, I feel that Barnette didn't take the time to flesh this story out like it needed to. The reader is left to come to too many conclusions on their own. I had a hard time connecting with Cassandra or falling in love with Viktor. I never really got to know them well enough. While it seemed like Cassandra had an interesting back story Barnette didn't sift through it enough. Cassandra is a call girl but doesn't like the work, so why does she do it? It was never explained how she got in to that line of work and since it was mentioned that she didn't like it I feel like we did need a reason. This book reads like a novel that hasn't been edited or read through. It reads like a very good novel that hasn't been edited or read through, though. Grammar wise the book is great but there were some odd things like the apartment missing a TV and then one being there a few chapters later. And just the general lack of... Expansion on the details of the plot. This book is a pretty present with nice wrapping paper and bows. Something pretty must be inside it but Barnette never takes the time to open the present up to find out. (Ps. A lot of people have complained about the m/m scene in the beginning of the novel. Different strokes for different folks. That being said, I know that if you buy the book off of Barnes and Nobles there's a disclaimer in the summary. I really like that Barnette writes characters who have sexualities that aren't black and white.)

A quick and entertaining read. I've been following Armintrout's blog for a while, but this is her first book that I get a chance to read. Barnette/Armintrout laid out the usual paranormal romance plot, but made it enough her own as to create an original story. Despite the novel not being very long, the character are well fleshed out: their passions and issues feel real, the reader can empathize with Cassie and Viktor's personal dramas, and you wish you knew more about them. That's the book's only fault: more than once while reading, I wished the story would have been expanded more and given a chance to breathe and develop more thoroughly. The romance is well-built and believable, but it would have benefited from a wider timeframe in which to grow and affirm itself. Basically, the book is good, but one ends up with feeling it could have been even better, and Barnette would have been perfectly able to make it go that extra mile and be better. Still, I found the erotic parts very well executed: neither overpowering nor thrown in for kicks, but rather very well integrated with the flow of the story and extremely intense. For some reason (I'm not usually into that kind of thing) the m/m scene was probably the hottest and I could really empathize with Cassie's curiosity and slight confusion. Bravo Barnette for that and bravo for helping me out of this insufferable bog of sparkly vampires and ikea porn that seems to have women swooning all over the world.

Relatively quick but dull :/ Even though I am completely over the vampire premise right now i saw potential here, I really just got what i expected. The writing had numerous flickers of poetry that were definitely my favorite aspect of this book. I suppose it's a soulmate situation but nothing was given to thrum my pulse in the slightest to even begin to understand how these two could suddenly have such an intense connection. As far as the fiction goes, very classic, nothing too far out of the box which is always perceived by preference, although the 'minion' aspect was original i felt that it was weak. Could've still pushed the fear/anxiety of that demise and actually any and all emotions of this book could have been enhanced without affecting the length.

Could have been a really great story but the mm scene just killed it for me. I say this a lot, but for me it's not romantic or a believable romance when the hero is fucking men while he is with the h. And she sees it and it's descriptive. I'm not a prude as we all know but mm scenes are great if that's what the book is about, even mfm or mmf when that is clearly stated as the romance, like Travis or Songbird or Try, which is one of my favorite books. But there is nothing romantic about seeing and getting a descriptive scene with the hero and a man giving a Bj and then the hero taking him from behind, moaning and thrusting into him and speaking lovingly to him while the h waits in the hallway and oversees this. The love scene between Cassie and Viktor left me remembering him with the male prostitute. I couldn't get past it. It, for me, was a turnoff.

It was good. A nice little romance. It was short- more of a novella. I'm doing a book challenge on the site again this year. I always feel a little guilty when I count a novella as a bood read. Almost like cheating if I count small books. But on the other hand if I want to legislate by number of pages or something, then it feels a bit anal retentive. The challenge is supposed to be fun. So I don't count it like 100 pages- novella 101 page full grown book. If it's in stand alone book format I cou It was good. A nice little romance. It was short- more of a novella. Armintrout. I loved the blood ties series and this one was very similar to that ...

This was a quick, entertaining read. Cassie's past haunts her in ways she can't understand, but when she meets Viktor and learns that monsters are real, the puzzle pieces start to come together. I particularly liked Cassie's character, and found I could relate to her. I'm a fan of this author's writing under her other pen name, Jennifer Armintrout, and I was glad to see she's writing erotic romance. I will look for more books by both her alter egos. I enjoy this author when she writes under Jennifer Armintrout, so I decided to take her books penned under her surname for a spin. I Enjoyed the book and the characters in it. I think it had more potential but was a good read. it was labeled as erotica but was mild to me. Still sexy, but much more story line than most eroticas that I have read. In my opinion, it was more paranormal romance. A surprisingly sweet story with an intriguing twist.

I didn't really get into it, but I guess it's because it's not a full book. I've read many of the reviews and some are not liking the MM scene, but I actually did like it. Besides it wasn't exactly a long one. (the scene that is.. ;) )It's a quick, nice read but I'd like to know more background and such so I wouldn't mind it being a full book. I'm a fan of this author, but it's quite obvious that this has been one of her earlier works. Her more recent writing is more fluid and much improved, with a better hold of character and more seamless storytelling. This would be a good read for those into vampire/paranormal romances, which I just realized isn't my genre. Loved it from beginning to end!! Dont read much vampire books but this was great. Romantic and action and comedy and heart-warming and drama all in one small package.... Wish this was a series. Love the mental pictures the author painted with her words too. 5 blood sucking stars! *****

It was an interesting read, I was into it until the m|m scene, when I had an inkling what was about to go down I stopped reading, it's just not might thing, the book could totally do without that imho. Disappointed, this book could have been good. Whoop!! Short but substantially good. Though I hate the reincarnation theme, I don't really find the point, if it is good enough the couple why to do that? anyways. Whoop!!
